There were strong performances across the pitch as West Ham put in arguably their performance of the season to thrash Manchester United 3-1 on Saturday.
It was a brilliant team display, but one player was singled out by roundly beaten opposing manager, Jose Mourinho.
Issa Diop’s performance was apparently of particular interest to the under-fire Portuguese. We’ve taken a look at the numbers that drew that particular praise…
West Ham started off on the front foot, before settling in to soak up the pressure as the game wore on; Diop looked comfortable with either approach.
He made five clearances at the heart of the defence, as well as two interceptions and two tackles as his partnership with Fabian Balbuena continues to grow.
His passing accuracy was incredible; 96 per cent of his 25 passes found their intended target. He looks every inch the modern defender.
Better than all United’s options
Diop is now producing the kind of performances that mark him out as a defender who could play for a top six club.
He is still so young and only going to improve. After his period of adaptation, he now looks settled alongside Balbuena.
He is quick, strong, physical, good in the air and accurate on the ball. That’s the type of player the Hammers have long since needed at the back.
