West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski put in a superb display against Manchester City at the London Stadium yesterday.

And the Polish stopper’s performance could not have come at a better time.

He joined the east London outfit from Swansea City in the summer of 2018 for around £7 million (BBC). Fabianski instantly proved to be a real hit and and absolutely bargain.

The 35-year-old’s form has been shaky since he returned from injury in December last year.

Many Hammers fans were suggesting that Fabianski was not the same goalkeeper. And in truth, he seemed to be an absolute shadow of his former self.

The former Arsenal man’s confidence was shot. He lacked any kind of composure or authority when commanding his penalty area.

And some West Ham fans were calling for David Moyes to make an upgrade in the goalkeeping department in the summer.

Stunning performance from the Pole

Fabianski put in a top class display against City yesterday, however, and reminded everyone that he still has what it takes at the very highest level.

The 35-year-old made two vital saves from Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez at extremely crucial moments in the second-half.

He also oozed calmness, composure and authority when commanding his 18-yard box. It was a flawless display from the Pole. And he seemed to be so much more like his old self.

Fabianski is out of contract with West Ham next summer, by which time he will be 36. If the former Arsenal and Swansea man continues the form he displayed yesterday, however, he will undoubtedly be offered a new deal.

Yesterday’s performance from Fabianski was a much-needed one. It was a gentle reminder to David Moyes and the West Ham fans that the 35-year-old is still an elite goalkeeper.

It must help having a more organised and well-drilled defensive unit sitting in front of him. That goes without saying.

And the 54-capped Poland international just needs to keep it up now.
