What West Ham fans did when Ray Winstone spoke over the tannoy at half-time during Southampton clash proves one thing

West Ham United played out a totally soul destroying 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday, and even Ray Winstone was unable to lift everyone’s spirits at half-time.

Winstone – a Hollywood movie star – is a lifelong West Ham fan, and the current team must be right up there with the worst that he’s ever seen during his lifetime.

Graham Potter has failed to make much of any impact since he took over at The London Stadium.

In fact, it could be argued that the Hammers are even worse now than we were when Julen Lopetegui was in charge.

That’s certainly true from an attacking perspective, but perhaps not a defensive one.

Potter has made numerous mistakes since taking over at West Ham, and it’s clear to see that he is already under pressure.

Many Hammers fans are beginning to lose interest, if they haven’t already done so.

What West Ham fans did when Ray Winstone spoke at half-time

West Ham were truly awful against Southampton on Saturday.

The Saints were more than deserving of their late equaliser.

However, the individual performances from each and every West Ham player were quite simply unacceptable.

Southampton are the worst team in the Premier League remember!

Apathetic is the perfect word to describe the atmosphere inside the London Stadium on Saturday. Even Winstone’s dulcet tones weren’t enough to lift the mood.

The Hammers have a new half-time feature at the London Stadium. Just before the second-half kicks off, a pre-recorded message from Winstone is played over the tannoy, urging the Hammers fans to get back to their seats.

However, according to The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas, hardly any fans actually listened to the announcement, and chose to remain in the concourse area of the stadium instead.

Who can blame them?

What Graham Potter has said about the West Ham fans

Potter has to be really careful that the majority of Hammers fans don’t turn on him, especially the away support.

When that happens, there is usually no coming back.

Potter responded when asked about the West Ham fans booing during recent games, when speaking to reporters:

I completely understand where the supporters are coming from. I understand where the crowd are at because we haven’t done well enough at home. We haven’t won enough and played well enough, so you can understand there’s a frustration there.

This is normal and we accept that and we have to take that responsibility. But I think if they can see something, the crowd get behind us and then, like I said, it’s a fantastic atmosphere and really pushes the team.

That’s all well and good, but he has to start picking up some results now. What he has served up so far has been nowhere near good enough, and that has to change quickly.
