What one West Ham player did late on against Southampton was not only embarrassing but simply inexcusable

Well, that performance from West Ham United against Southampton was horrendous wasn’t it.

As West Ham fans, we should all thank our lucky stars that there are three utterly awful teams in the Premier League this season.

We couldn’t even beat one of them on Saturday though!

The Hammers haven’t made any progress at all since Graham Potter arrived at the London Stadium, that’s the truth of the matter.

Potter may have got West Ham defending slightly better as a team, but the football on display has been utterly dire to watch and there is absolutely no cutting edge inside the final third.

The pressure is firmly on the Hammers head coach now. It seems like he strolled into the London Stadium thinking that he had a free hit for the rest of the season.

Potter made some horrific decisions during the West Ham vs Southampton draw, and he has to take a lot of the blame for his side’s failure to beat the whipping boys of the Premier League.

What Vladimir Coufal did for West Ham vs Southampton was inexcusable

After the Hammers went 1-0 up against the Saints, the players seemed to sink back into their shells, especially during the final five minutes or so of the game.

In addition to that, Potter made some truly horrific substitutions – that overly cautious approach will be his undoing in the end.

Nothing summed up the lack of ambition at West Ham more that what Vladimir Coufal did in the final few minutes.

The fact that the 32-year-old even started the game shows where the Hammers are at as a club right now.

New contract talks between West Ham and Coufal have hit an impasse, and it’s very likely that he will leave in the summer.

Judging by what he did on Saturday against Southampton, his exit from the London Stadium cannot come quick enough.

Embarrassing Vladimir Coufal moment

With the Hammers winning 1-0 and around five minutes left to play, Coufal was in possession of the football deep inside Southampton’s half.

He had an opening to cross the ball to Luis Guilherme who was in acres of space.

However, the 32-year-old chose to try and protect the ball in the corner instead, and the rest is history.

Southampton won back possession, went up the other end and made it 1-1.

It really was an awful passage of play from West Ham and specifically, Coufal.

The thing that concerns me is that for a player to do that, he must have received instructions from his manager to protect the ball in the corner late on in the game.
