The 1-0 defeat to Brentford on Saturday was a real wake-up call for everyone involved with West Ham United.

Whilst Graham Potter is the man West Ham need to take us forward in my opinion, he is not a magician, and positive change will certainly not happen overnight.

The general feeling amongst the Hammers fans right now is one of apathy, and that was highlighted by the fact that hundreds of fans began pouring out of the ground during our defeat to Brentford with 15 minutes still to play!

Surely the West Ham owners must have stood up and took notice of that. The fans are disillusioned right now, and Potter has a serious task on his hands if he is to oversee some real progress.

The London Stadium is not fit for purpose, certainly not as a football ground anyway.

That’s definitely not the club’s only issue though.

David Sullivan has set the club back by at least six months after the appointment of Julen Lopetegui in the summer.

The fans are sick and tired of the same poor decisions costing the club, and it feels like we have a real mountain to climb as a club, if we are to turn things around.

The 1-0 loss to the Bees showed everyone just how far off it the Hammers are right now.

The fans inside the stadium were silent throughout the majority of the game, and I really don’t blame them.

The team we are watching these days is a poorly put together one. Many of the players lack courage, commitment, determination or passion for the badge.

There is no cohesion in the way that West Ham play, but that’s no Potter’s fault.

The blame lies solely with Julen Lopetegui as far as I’m concerned. The Spaniard’s ineptness shone through brightly, and he would have taken us down to the Championship in my opinion, had he stayed on.

However, it seems like some fans have forgotten just how bad the hapless Lopetegui was.

According to The Athletic, one fan was so disgruntled during our home defeat to Brentford that he shouted out the unthinkable.

Tim Spiers writes:

“Bring back Lopetegui” one fan shouts as a smattering of boos greet the end of an utterly miserable afternoon.

Seriously? I’m sure the shout for Lopetegui’s return was said in jest. However, the point still remains – we all have to be patient with Potter.

He has an impossible task on his hands right now, and the Hammers fans just have to cling to any positive signs we see.

There have been numerous encouraging moments under the 49-year-old. The way the team have pressed as a unit, on the most part, has been great to see.

And the players seem to be performing with much more creative freedom. However, there are huge issues that need to be addressed.

West Ham are still defending incredibly poorly, and our midfield lacks any kind of pace, power or ball-carrying ability.

Potter has placed too much trust in players who simply aren’t good enough – Konstantinos Mavropanos being the shining example of that.

The Hammers head coach needs to oversee a big squad overhaul in the summer.

But to get the West Ham fans back onside in the here and now, his team need to play with more attacking intent, courage and dynamism.

We are in a better place now than when Lopetegui was at the helm, but Potter definitely needs a few wins under his belt if he is to turn the tide.
