Just as West Ham are enjoying what promises to be their best season for 35 years, the so-called “Big Six” clubs have declared their intention to enter into a new breakaway Super League.

The bombshell dropped last night as West Ham’s Premier League rivals Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Saturday’s opponents Chelsea were named as the clubs entering the new league.

European Super League announcement puts cat amongst the pigeons during West Ham’s best season for 35 years

The Hammers sit fourth in the table with six games to play and are aiming for a Champions League spot.

But the European Super League may yet change the complexion of the season – and the game – as we know it.

UEFA and FIFA rules state clubs can be expelled from their domestic leagues and current European competitions if they join The Super League.

West Ham fans are wondering what it all might mean for their club.

And now it has emerged West Ham co-owners Sullivan and Gold – no strangers to fan outcry themselves – have been called to an emergency meeting to be held on Tuesday.

West Ham owners called to emergency meeting tomorrow morning

“Premier League to host meeting with 14 clubs tomorrow morning,” Sky Sports reporter Bryan Swanson confirmed on Twitter.

“Clubs involved in proposed European Super League are not included.

“Meeting chaired by Richard Masters online.”

“A Premier League shareholders meeting (due to take place at 11am tomorrow) without six of the 20 clubs is a measure of the division this ESL has caused,” Times reporter Matt Lawton said on Twitter.

“But then why are we surprised? I recall Ed Woodward once referring to players as ‘assets’. To these guys it’s just business.”

Sullivan and Gold are expected to be asked for their views on whether and what sanctions should be imposed on the six clubs involved.

Meeting likely to seek views of Sullivan, Gold and the other 14 owners over sanctions as UEFA chief vows to dish out punishments

It comes after UEFA chairman Aleksandr Ceferin slammed those involved and declared bans and punishments would be enforced as soon as possible (Sky Sports).

Furious fans of West Ham and clubs across the football pyramid have been outraged by the plans.

Indeed many have called for West Ham to boycott this Saturday’s crunch match with Chelsea as a result – see full story here.

A revised table published since the shock announcement shows that without the six breakaway clubs, West Ham would be nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Not only that but West Ham would also be just one win away from sealing a first ever Premier League title. Read the full story below.
