West Ham have made it clear signings are coming with a bold statement when announcing the arrival of new recruitment chief Nils Koppen.

When Hammers News reported on the news that West Ham were set to appoint Nils Koppen to head up recruitment last week, we stated new signings would not be far behind.

Well that seems like it will certainly be the case after the Belgian was unveiled by the Hammers on Saturday.

On Friday we reported West Ham are set to embark on spending spree after a double Daniel Kretinsky revelation.

Unveiling Koppen, West Ham’s owners made it clear he will immediately start identifying and recruiting the players needed to win promotion back to the top flight.

“Koppen will begin work at West Ham United as part of a new football leadership structure for the men’s team,” West Ham said in a statement.

“(He will be) tasked with identifying and recruiting the players needed to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

“Key to the role will be leading the Club’s scouting and recruitment operation and supporting the Board with football administration and negotiations with players, other clubs and intermediaries.”

Koppen himself has also made it clear that getting to work on signings is his top priority.

Koppen: Focus is on signings to get West Ham back in Premier League

But he revealed Nuno Espirito Santo has made one thing perfectly clear to him about what kind of players and characters he wants.

“The first focus will obviously be the transfer window and identifying the correct players to move us forward next season,” Koppen said.

“We also want to keep the core squad intact. They had a very good run at the end of the Premier League season, so if we can keep that together and not make too many changes, we can start off with a good base.

“Nuno has also emphasised that we all must have our focus together in the same direction. For any new players coming in, they have to be fully on board for what we want to achieve and feel what the expectations are for a big club. It is a huge honour to represent West Ham United.”

The news comes after West Ham secured Nuno’s long-time number two Rui Pedro Silva as his new assistant coach.

Silva who was expected to join his fellow Portuguese when he took over from Graham Potter last September but that never materialised.

The appointment of Koppen is the latest in a series of positive and well-received moves by West Ham since Kretinsky took over as majority owner.

The proof of the pudding will be in the eating, though, and it is now all eyes on who Koppen can bring in to get West Ham back where they belong.
