Arthur Masuaku provided Manuel Pellegrini with a handy energy boost when he replaced Aaron Cresswell after four games of the season.
The Englishman was struggling and West Ham had no points; Masuaku came in and added vigour and pace to a backline that was creaking.
However, the feeling persists that he is not really a defender; he lacks the necessary focus. His pace and trickery is more suited to a role on the left wing, but Pellegrini persists with him at left back.

While Cresswell has taken his starting spot back, Masuaku was given a start in a rotated Hammers side for the visit of bitter rivals Tottenham in the EFL Cup last night.
Pellegrini has won the competition before and it was viewed as a reasonable chance for West Ham to get their hands on some silverware; an opportunity that was boosted by Spurs playing just 48 hours before against Manchester City.
It didn’t turn out that way, and Masuaku made an error to allow Mauricio Pochettino’s side to net a second goal; at 2-0, the game was all but over and it ended 3-1.
That led some fans to take aim at Masuaku on Twitter after another defensive error. Patience is running out…
