Newcastle have followed in the footsteps of West Ham by ending a decades-long trophy drought.
West Ham had gone 43 years without a major trophy when they lifted the Europa Conference League in June 2023.
Newcastle United’s wait had been much longer.
The Magpies ended a 70-year wait for major silverware when the beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
When West Ham’s heroes returned from Prague an estimated 500,000 people lined the streets of east London all the way from Upton Park to Stratford Town Hall.
They were scenes most Hammers fans had waited a lifetime for.
Newcastle follow in West Ham’s footsteps by ending trophy wait
It was Newcastle’s turn for a long overdue day in the sun this weekend.
Hundreds of thousands of Geordies flooded into Newcastle to celebrate the club’s historic cup win.
Like West Ham, the team travelled on two open-top buses through the city’s streets crowds roaring them on.
Celebrity Newcastle fans Ant and Dec hosted a day of celebration as Magpies boss Eddie Howe described it as a “very emotional day” while club and Premier League legend Alan Shearer said: “We could get used to this.”
When West Ham won the Europa Conference League, many pundits and rival fans tried to belittle and scoff at the achievement.

It was described as a ‘Mickey Mouse trophy’ despite West Ham going unbeaten in 18 games to seal their first silverware since 1980.
Not to mention beating Champions League regulars Anderlecht, Steaua Bucharest, Gent, AZ Alkmaar and Italian side Fiorentina among others on their way to the title.
Newcastle have also come in for some party pooping criticism.
Their former player John Barnes has had a pop at Howe’s side for celebrating while the season is ongoing, suggesting they don’t have a true winning mentality.
Paul Scholes and a host of other pundits and journalists have laughed off Newcastle’s achievement – and suggestions Howe deserves a trophy – as ‘it’s only the League Cup’.
Now West Ham fans are all saying the same things about Newcastle’s trophy parade.
West Ham fans saying same things about Newcastle’s trophy parade
Watching the scenes of Newcastle’s fans taking to the streets for the bus parade had many Hammers fans feeling nostalgic.
West Ham fans have been defending their rivals’ right to enjoy every minute of the trophy win.
For some Hammers supporters, it has made them miss the David Moyes era of playing in Europe three seasons in a row.
But unlike many other Premier League clubs, the general consensus of opinion from West Ham fans towards Newcastle has been ‘fair play’.

‘Magnificent – ‘Hope you enjoy every minute’
Hammers account The West Ham Place said: “To the Newcastle fans going to the parade, I hope you have a wicked time. If it’s like our one in 2023, it will be amazing.”
West Ham Central, which has over 120,000 followers on X, says it has been ‘magnificent’ watching Newcastle celebrate.
“Photos and videos from this have been magnificent – honestly, any team winning any trophy is special but when it’s your first in a very very long time, it just hits you deeper in the feelings,” West Ham Central said.
“Fair play Newcastle, beautiful scenes.”
Another West Ham defended Newcastle in the face of criticism from an Arsenal supporter who said ‘they probably spent more on the parade than they made from the competition’.
“How can you criticise this, Newcastle have every right to celebrate their trophy win and I’m sure every West Ham fan is happy to see this because we enjoyed it when it was us that won a trophy,” Tommy Tucker said.
“You’ll scream when you see who this guy supports,” another West Ham fan added in response.
West Ham Views said of the parade: “This was us with the Conference League. It just made all the heartache and anger worth it.”
Another Hammers fan added: “Some fans are clueless (criticising Newcastle’s celebrations). ESL club fans are just the worst. I hope Newcastle fans enjoyed every minute of it and Arsenal win nothing.”
Ironworks Alliance praised one of Newcastle’s tifos and were delighted for the club.
“Excellent tifo this was. The fact that they went on to actually win it and write themselves in the history books makes it even better.”
Watching the Newcastle celebrations has been a real trip down memory lane for any Hammers.
