West Ham manager David Moyes spoke to the press this afternoon, and made a worrying comment about Jarrod Bowen.
It’s common knowledge amongst the West Ham fans, journalists and pundits alike that David Moyes really should be signing a new striker in the January transfer window.
Jarrod Bowen has been playing in the centre-forward role since Michail Antonio suffered an injury whilst on international duty last month, and Moyes has been pushing the narrative that the 26-year-old could evolve into a striker.
The former Hull City ace is a real hard-working forward, and he’ll always put in a shift when playing through the middle, but I think he’s far better out on the right wing.
I just think that the Hammers star is more suited to playing the inverted winger role, and we’d be a better team if Moyes signs a proper striker who fits his system – someone like Serhou Guirassy or Santiago Gimenez would be perfect for us.
I reckon that the Scot could be set to go down a different route though…
In my opinion, David Moyes won’t be signing a striker
Moyes addressed the media during his pre-match press conference, ahead of our clash with Fulham on Sunday.
And the Scot reminded everyone of just how successful he has been when converting wingers into central strikers in the past, as quoted by WHUFC.com:
“Jarrod Bowen is dangerous wherever he plays. I think Jarrod can play as a centre-forward as well – I thought for a couple of years that he was developing [that way] and if you look at the history at the Club, we’ve had Marko Arnautović who was a wide player. I put him at centre-forward and he did a brilliant job. Then we’ve done a bit the same with Micky Antonio, who was mainly a wide player and we moved him through the middle. I think because it’s so difficult to find or buy centre forwards who you can bring in and get success, it’s sometimes the ones you’ve got who you have to nurture.”
That’s a clear indication that Moyes has no interest in bringing a new striker to the London Stadium this winter, as far as I’m concerned.
He likes his forward players to play in a very specific way, and there just aren’t many strikers out there who are capable of performing that role.
Jarrod Bowen clearly has the work-rate, determination and drive to play up front for West Ham. I have no doubts in my mind that Moyes views him as someone who will transform into a centre-forward.
And for that reason, I just cant see David Moyes signing a striker for West Ham anytime soon.
