Under pressure David Moyes will face the press on Friday and there’s 3 key questions he simply must be asked.

David Moyes is a man under mounting pressure at West Ham.

No wins in seven games in 2024 so far, speculation is rife the Scot has four games to save his job at West Ham.

That starts with Saturday’s huge clash against relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest.

A plethora of managers have been linked with the Hammers this week.

It comes amid fresh talk Moyes will leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

Indeed some claim he may even go before then should West Ham not turn a corner.

Forest have been playing well as an attacking force. So after the club’s biggest home league defeat for 61 years, this will not be easy for the Hammers.

Now under pressure Moyes is set to face the press and there’s 3 questions he must be asked.

The Scot will go before the media on Friday ahead of Saturday’s trip to the City Ground.

And the journalists privileged enough to have a place in the room must start asking questions fans actually want to know the answers to.

Here are three questions that need to be put to Moyes in his pre-Forest presser.

• 1) Why is he persisting with Nayef Aguerd in defence? It looked like Nayef Aguerd may have played his last game for the Hammers when he cried off sick over the festive period before meeting up with Morocco for AFCON. Speculation abound he wanted out and could be sold. But he is still here and still making basic errors. Aguerd’s heart doesn’t seem to be in it at West Ham. He is weak, slow and makes rash decisions or is too easily beaten all too often. He has never lived up to his £30m price tag yet Moyes continues to persist with him at centre-back. The truth is it’s because he can hit long 70-yard diagonal balls – often straight to the opposition. Moyes argues it is for balance. But West Ham’s defence was functioning very well over the last month or so with Konstantinos Mavropanos starting to find his feet. But he was harshly dropped as soon as Aguerd came back from AFCON following – you guessed it – his mistake which saw them dumped out. Aguerd’s defending was pathetic at Man United and against Arsenal as the Hammers shipped nine goals in two games. Moyes must explain why Mavropanos lost the shirt and why he is persisting with the Moroccan.

• 2) Why is Kurt Zouma captain and is he playing with injury? After the unacceptable defeat to Arsenal and his own woeful performances of late – which saw him dragged off at half-time against the Gunners – Moyes must explain why he is keeping Kurt Zouma as captain. He cannot play two games close together, his performances are not that of a leader and he looks like he is playing with injury as he is so immobile. Zouma has not even had the decency or conscience to speak to fans and apologise for the Arsenal humbling. Instead that was left to someone who is proper captain material – Vladimir Coufal.

• Why are you treating Maxwel Cornet this way? Moyes is constantly bemoaning his lack of left-sided attacking options. He tried and failed to sign someone in that position in January. And he allowed Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals to leave. He has then ridiculously played back-up right-back Ben Johnson on the wing since. Johnson has given it his best to his credit. But there’s a reason he has had so much time on the ball – because the opposition are more than happy for him to have it knowing he is not going to hurt them. Who would you rather face as a full-back, Johnson or Maxwel Cornet? Quite what Cornet has done to be completely frozen out by Moyes is anyone’s guess. He scored on his last start – which was only his second in 18 months since joining for £17.5m. Something has clearly gone on between Moyes and the player. The manager cannot be allowed to get away with using a lack of left-sided options as an excuse when he has Cornet gathering dust on the bench. It’s unfair on the player and supporters. We deserve an explanation.
