Trevor Sinclair held the West Ham United owners to account when speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT yesterday, highlighting how baffling it was that David Moyes didn’t sign a striker in January.

The Scot decided against bringing a centre-forward to the London Stadium last month. Not even someone on a short-term loan deal.

Whether that was Moyes’s decision or the board’s, however, is debatable.

David Sullivan and David Gold undoubtedly had some kind of role in the end of result.

West Ham have made a fine start to the 2020/21 Premier League campaign.

We are currently sitting in sixth spot in the table, just one point adrift of the top four.

The Hammers’ brilliant form is under very real threat, however. Our season is in real danger of being derailed.

Michail Antonio is a huge doubt for Monday with tight hamstrings whilst Andriy Yarmolenko could be out for the season with knee ligament damage.

Meanwhile, Mipo Odubeko is clearly not ready to be playing regular Premier League football.

West Ham could live to regret their failure to sign a striker in January. We have a great opportunity to force our way inside the top four this season. The 2020/21 is a complete anomaly. There are no fans whilst regular top four contenders like Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are having real problems.

Trevor Sinclair tells Jim White straight about West Ham problem

This could have been our chance to ‘do a Leicester’. Unfortunately, Moyes hasn’t been given the tools with which to take West Ham to another level.

And Trevor Sinclair told Jim White on talkSPORT his exact thoughts on the situation at the London Stadium:

“You’ve made your bed, for me, and I go back to the striking options. As we already know, there is history in this. Michail Antonio; he struggles to play every game, especially with the fixture pile-up we have got now and he wasn’t able to make the squad for the night. When he isn’t playing, then who plays? It’s one of the most difficult positions to learn and master on the pitch. It’s alright saying I am a forward, but actually playing that No.9 role when you have to hold the ball up, bring other players into play, you’ve got to know when to stretch the opposition at times to give yourself a chance to get out. If the ball is bouncing off you and you are giving possession away, you just don’t have a foothold in the game.”

Sinclair is absolutely spot on here.

David Moyes choosing not to sign the numerous ‘Sullivan specials’ who were undoubtedly offered to him is admirable.

It is truly baffling that we didn’t even try to bring in a striker on loan, however. Or even a free agent on a short-term deal. It may well end up costing us dearly.

We all know who’s to blame, however. Let’s just hope that Michail Antonio remains fit between now and the end of the season. Because if he doesn’t, we will surely start to slide down the table. And considering our lack of business in January, that would be no more than the owners deserve.
