Tim Steidten held talks with manager who’s won nothing in his career to replace Julen Lopetegui at West Ham

West Ham United replaced Julen Lopetegui with Graham Potter four weeks ago, but it could have been a very different story had Tim Steidten got his way.

Julen Lopetegui was a terrible appointment, and the West Ham board realised that in the end, thankfully.

Tim Steidten did actually warn the Hammers owners against appointing Lopetegui in the first place.

And the German was proven to be bang on the money.

However, his choice wasn’t much better, it has to be said!

The 45-year-old has been officially dismissed now, after the Hammers chose to go down a different route with Potter and Kyle Macaulay heading up the recruitment process.

Stediten left under a cloud in the end.

That said, his choice of manager to replace Lopetegui wouldn’t have helped his cause one little bit.

Tim Steidten wanted 57-yo to replace Lopetegui at West Ham

The German former Hammers director of football is now on the hunt for a new job.

He made some terrible signings during his time with West Ham, including Konstantinos Mavropanos, Niclas Fullkrug and Luis Guilherme.

It doesn’t surprise me that he was moved on in the end. He chased the limelight a little too much for my liking as well.

The Athletic claim that Tim Steidten held talks with Roger Schmidt about replacing Julen Lopetegui, months before the Spaniard left.

The 57-year-old German hasn’t won a single trophy during his career. At least Potter has won four trophies, albeit out in Sweden!

I’m convinced that Steidten’s downfall at the London Stadium began when he tried to bring Schmidt to the club.

Thankfully Tim Steidten didn’t get his way at West Ham

Appointing Schmidt would have been a terrible decision from the Hammers board in my opinion.

The German isn’t a young, up and coming hungry manager, nor is he a particularly likeable character it seems.

He has a history of clashing with fans, after he refused to apologise for his side’s 5-0 defeat to Porto back in March (Scottish Sun).

Schmidt has clashed with his players in the past as well, most recently when he banished key man Orkun Kökçü from his Benfica squad when he was in charge of the Portuguese giants.

The last thing the Hammers needed was another abrasive manager to come into the club when Lopetegui left.

Thankfully Tim Steidten didn’t get his way, and West Ham ended up with Graham Potter instead.
