After another poor display on Saturday, Jack Wilshere and Mark Noble shouldn’t get a third chance in the same team.
Manuel Pellegrini decided to ignore fans who urged him to rotate the pair. There was a strong view from supporters that both men couldn’t play in the same side together.
Both were once again selected against Bournemouth. Fans once again watched an abject midfield display.
It’s clear that Pellegrini wanted to remain loyal to both. Liverpool was a tough opener after all. However, against Bournemouth, it really was down to the pair to control the game with ease. This is what they failed to do.
Despite playing two defensive midfielders in Wilshere and Noble, the opposition are getting a lot of room in front of the back four. Calum Wilson’s goal was a testament to this. Despite picking the ball up just inside West Ham’s half he glided past defenders and slotted home.
Why Wilson was given so much room when Wilshere and Noble are supposed to be protecting the defence is bemusing.
However, the lack of control they had on the game was utterly disappointing. West Ham never looked truly comfortable at 1-0. There was a pedestrian nature to their play that showed Liverpool wasn’t a fluke last week.
Pellegrini should be getting more for his buck after spending in excess of £100million over the summer. However, he needs to start helping himself with his squad selection.
A third start for Wilshere and Noble against Arsenal would be criminal at this stage. Both men continue to operate at a lethargic tempo, whilst Unai Emery’s side looked full of pace against Chelsea.
You have to imagine that an angry Arsenal side could seriously expose West Ham’s gaps if the pair gets another recall.
Pellegrini made the error of selecting them once more against Bournemouth. Whether that was down to arrogance or faith we’ll never know.
However, fresh legs simply have to be put in against the Gunners at the Emirates next week. Persisting with this pair when you look at the upcoming fixtures is a daunting thought.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Spurs are all coming up within a nine-week period. If Pellegrini is going to change it up then he needs to do so immediately to involved being left behind at the bottom of the league.
Bournemouth was an opportunity that West Ham didn’t take. Central to that was the pairing of Noble and Wilshere. Pellegrini has to now see that this isn’t working.
Failure to do so will see fans question his thought process.
