Same old story for West Ham as Julen Lopetegui plots perfect Steven Bergwijn transfer

Former Tottenham attacker Steven Bergwijn is reportedly firmly on the West Ham United radar in the summer transfer window.

However, it may well be the same old story for West Ham it seems.

The Hammers have chased Steven Bergwijn since the January transfer window earlier this year, but he remained with Ajax in the end.

With Julen Lopetegui now at the helm, I fully expected him to succeed where David Moyes failed, by signing a proper left winger.

The West Ham head coach should be prioritising the addition of a right-footed left winger, now that Said Benrahma has left the club on a permanent basis.

Jota Silva was believed to be Lopetegui’s main target, but links with the Portuguese winger have now gone cold.

Enter Steven Bergwijn. The former Tottenham man is right at the peak of his powers at this moment in time.

And it seems as though he could be set for a move back to London this summer, if the Hammers manage to deal with one very big issue indeed…

Same old story as West Ham eye Steven Bergwijn deal

The talented Dutch winger seems set to leave Ajax this summer, with the Eredivisie outfit keen to raise some funds.

He could be set for a move back to the Premier League from Holland before the start of the new season it seems.

According to De Telegraaf, West Ham are back in for Bergwijn, and Ajax are asking for around £21-25 million for him.

However, the Hammers face one huge problem in the race to sign the 26-year-old former Tottenham winger.

That is the fact that numerous Saudi clubs want to sign the Dutchman this summer, as do Ligue 1 side Marseille.

Saudi interest in our transfer targets is becoming a real problem for us this summer. First it was Youssef En-Nesyri, then Arthur Theate and now Bergwijn it seems.

Hopefully West Ham manage to win the race for Steven Bergwijn – he’s exactly the kind of player we need.

Firstly, he’s a right-footed left winger. We have plenty of options out wide on the right side of attack, but are incredibly weak on the left.

During his time with Tottenham, the 26-year-old bagged just eight goals and 10 assists in 83 games, but he’s faired far better with Ajax, with 29 goals and 11 assists to his name in just 76 outings.

Steven Bergwijn possesses blistering pace, impressive technical ability, can play anywhere along the front-line and would take West Ham to another level entirely.

Lopetegui has to get this one done this summer as far as I’m concerned.
