Said Benrahma was a man of few words during his time at West Ham but that has all changed as his departure was officially confirmed.

One of West Ham’s European heroes, Said Benrahma has now completed his £12.3m transfer to Lyon.

Benrahma departed West Ham on loan amid some controversy back in February – after the window had closed.

Lyon spoke out to lambast West Ham’s conduct only for it to emerge that technical issues prevented the paperwork being completed by the deadline.

The move was ratified, though, and Benrahma has been playing to convince Lyon to make the £5m loan deal permanent for the extra £12.3m.

That was not the only controversial thing about the Algerian winger’s move, though.

West Ham fans were furious when he and Pablo Fornals were offloaded without a replacement being brought in.

The Hammers paid the price too as their threadbare squad dropped out of the European spots in the second half of the campaign.

West Ham confirmed Benrahma’s exit on Sunday, paying tribute to the man who scored that crucial penalty in 2-1 Europa Conference League final victory over Fiorentina.

“The 28-year-old scored 24 goals in those 155 games, with none more memorable or important than the penalty he netted in the UEFA Europa Conference League final win over Fiorentina in Prague in June 2023, and registered 20 assists,” West Ham stated.

“Everyone at West Ham United would like to thank Saïd for his contribution and wish him the best for the future.”

Now Benrahma has posted a seriously emotional goodbye to West Ham on social media.

Benrahma posts seriously emotional goodbye to West Ham

The skilful star, who many felt was somewhat stifled by David Moyes at times after arriving from Brentford, has taken to Instagram to say goodbye to the Hammers.

Benrahma was one of few players to publicly row with Moyes during their time together.

But they were good for each other in many ways too.

“It’s time to say goodbye to this club, which has meant a lot to me,” Benrahma said alongside a video compilation.

“I’ve spent many emotional moments and found much happiness within this institution.

“I would like to thank the club, the staff, and the supporters for the warm welcome and unwavering support I have received throughout my history with West Ham.

“I have experienced great moments within this club, and I wish the best to the club.”

End product was issue but Said delivered when it mattered most

Once a Hammer, always a Hammer.

Benrahma was an important player in the club’s journey to becoming European regulars over the last three years.

Benrahma frustrated at times towards the end of his West Ham career.

His end product was often found lacking in the final 18 months.

But when it mattered most in that final he delivered with aplomb.

And for that he will always be fondly remembered in east London.

As will his staunchest supporter – his mum, who was a regular in the crowd at the London Stadium.
