West Ham United enjoyed a terrific summer transfer window, and Paul Merson was very impressed by one of our new signings in particular.
Julen Lopetegui worked wonders at the London Stadium during the summer transfer window, bringing nine fantastic new signings to West Ham.
And Paul Merson has absolutely lauded one of the Hammers’ new signings.
We learned a lot during the transfer window about how Lopetegui plans to take this great club forward.
The main thing for me is that West Ham are now operating like a proper football club in the transfer window.
It’s not just the fact that we made some top quality signings, but also the ruthlessness and efficiency with which Lopetegui, Tim Steidten and David Sullivan operated.
Whilst all nine new arrivals impressed me, there is one in particular who really caught Merson’s attention…
Paul Merson makes big claim about West Ham new-boy
The famous football pundit has become well renowned over the past decade for his extremely bold takes.
And his latest offering may well raise some eyebrows, although I actually agree with him this time!

Paul Merson took to his official X account this morning, and named his three best signings of the summer transfer window.
And one of them was West Ham defender Max Kilman.
The 27-year-old, signed from Wolves for £40 million earlier this summer, has been exceptional for the Hammers during our first three games of the season.
Max Kilman has put in a series of stunning performances for West Ham that have made the £40m fee we paid for him look like good value for money.
Merson, who clearly loves the towering centre-half, said, “I think he has gone under the radar. I think he is a top top defender. You need good defenders in your team when you have got players bombing forward. And that’s the name of the game. For me, Kilman is a real real good signing, good centre-half, does what it says on the tin, and I think he takes West Ham to the next level as well.”
Max Kilman has been West Ham’s best player this season
It could be argued that he has actually been the man of the match in every one of our three games so far this term.
He was one of the rare shining lights during West Ham’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on the opening day of the Premier League campaign, and then he put in a dominant 9/10 performance against Crystal Palace last weekend.
On Wednesday, Kilman was colossal once again during our 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Bournemouth at the London Stadium..
Standing at 6ft 4in tall, the former Wolves man offers us a real physical presence at the back, and he plays with a real level of authority.
He’s incredibly composed in possession, and his ability to drive out from the back with the ball at his feet really is right out of the very top drawer.
Paul Merson is clearly a very big fan indeed of West Ham ace Max Kilman, and his take that the defender is one of the three best signings of the summer may well be seen as somewhat of a bold one.
However, I think he’s bang on the money.
