Paul Ince says he doesn’t understand West Ham’s Sanchez purchase

Paul Ince has slammed West Ham’s summer signing of Colombian international Carlos Sanchez from Fiorentina.

Ince is not a popular figure with Hammers fans due to the nature of his departure to join Manchester United in the 1990s but that has not stopped him having his say on his old club’s transfer business.

The former England international has taken aim at the arrival of Sanchez, a defensive midfielder just like Ince was.

What did he say?

Ince said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s The Monday Night Club (7:14pm, September 3, 2018): “I can’t believe they bought Sanchez, to be fair.

“He wasn’t great at Aston Villa. Then he got moved to Fiorentina and then he gets moved back to the Premier League. That’s one I am not too sure about.”

Why Ince has got it wrong

It is clear from Ince’s response that he has not seen a great deal of Sanchez. The vagueness of the answer shows that.

Of course, an aging defensive midfielder is not the most inspiring signing. The lack of energy in the Hammers midfield right now also draws that into sharper focus.

However, the Colombian international – who has 88 caps, which underlines the qualities he does have – is an experienced backup.

Declan Rice, Jack Wilshere, Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble will all be ahead of him in the pecking order when everybody is fit and on form; for Ince to say he ‘can’t believe’ the signing shows his ignorance of any context.
