Nuno was right to be worried about Mateus Fernandes as West Ham told they got very lucky

West Ham United may have had a point in feeling aggrieved at some of the decisions that went against them at Brentford, but a panel believe they got lucky with one against Everton.

Indeed, just a week before West Ham United’s damaging defeat against the Bees, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side beat Everton thanks to a late winner from Callum Wilson.

What changes would you make to this team and why? 👀

It was a dramatic game at the London Stadium, with one particular incident invoking the ire of former Irons boss David Moyes.

During the second half, Mateus Fernandes appeared to handle the ball in the West Ham penalty box against Everton, while grappling with Thierno Barry.

Nuno admitted he was worried Fernandes would give away a penalty and – according to the Premier League‘s key match incidents panel – he should have done.

Fernandes should have conceded a penalty against Everton

According to BBC Sport, the Premier League’s key match incidents panel (KMI) is an independent five-person panel that reviews refereeing decisions after the weekend’s actions.

They voted 4:1 that Fernandes should have been punished for handling the ball, suggesting a mistake from both referee Stuart Attwell and the VAR.

It was claimed at the time that “Fernandes accidentally handled the ball while grappling with an opponent.”

To boo or not to boo, that is the question… 😂

The KMI also claimed that the decision not to award a penalty to West Ham after Jordan Pickford clashed with Taty Castellanos was the right call.

West Ham’s Premier League luck quickly ran out

Onlookers have often said that refereeing decisions work themselves out over the course of a season.

Well, West Ham didn’t need to wait nearly as long as that.

Just seven days later, West Ham should have been awarded at least one penalty against Brentford when Pablo Felipe was brought down in the box.

Tomas Soucek might also have had a spot-kick awarded against him, while Konstantinos Mavropanos saw a goal ruled out due to a marginal offside.
