Not only will Nuno Espirito Santo be staying at West Ham United, the head coach could play a role in shaping the very outlook of the club going forward.

Following their relegation from the Premier League, West Ham have confirmed that Nuno will be staying next season

On a scale of 1-10, how confident are YOU that Nuno leads us straight back up? 👀

Here's why I think we can learn NOTHING from his time at Wolves 👇

Productive talks with West Ham’s owners saw Nuno keep his job, despite previous doubts about his immediate future after the club crashed into the Championship.

Now, Nuno will have a major say in what happens next.

Nuno to have major say in West Ham’s director of football appointment

According to The Athletic, Nuno will have a big say on the direction the club take when they appoint a director of football.

West Ham haven’t had much luck with sporting directors in recent years. Tim Steidten’s record was reasonably poor, while Kyle Macaulay did not last long in the role.

Quite what the difference between a sporting director, technical director and a director of football really is remains to be seen.

Still, West Ham have long insisted they will appoint a director of football, someone to work alongside Nuno on the transfer front.

That will no doubt be welcome news for Nuno, who played a leading role in the club’s January transfer business.

However, the whole point of having someone in place in that position is to ensure the squad isn’t built in one manager’s image. So, if Nuno were to leave, his successor wouldn’t be working with a group of players collected to play exactly his brand of football.

With that in mind, it does seem rather self-defeating to appoint someone Nuno will help choose. West Ham are not Nuno’s football club, he is simply one of many employees.

Backing your manager is one thing, but ceding so much control is fraught with risk – especially when not every signing in January worked out.
