Since taking charge at West Ham United six months ago, Nuno Espirito Santo has handed Premier League debuts to Mohamadou Kante, Ezra Mayers and Callum Marshall.
Chances, the head coach was at pains to point out, were earned through hard work rather than charity.
So when it was put to Nuno Espirito Santo – ahead of West Ham United’s trip to Brentford – that all Premier League clubs may soon be obliged to fast-track the development of their most exciting young talents, the experienced Iberian made sure to air his reservations.
Who will be the next breakout star from our academy?
Ezra Mayers and Lewis Orford are developing very nicely… 🌟
Nuno feels that giving youth a chance is ‘very, very important’. Especially at a club who pride themselves upon the pathway from the reserves to the first-team.
But new FIFA proposals detailed by The Athletic this week, Nuno says, would actually serve to undermine the opportunities handed to debutants like Mohamadou Kante, Ezra Mayers and Callum Marshall.
Nuno Espirito Santo explains how FIFA proposals would impact West Ham United

FIFA, The Athletic explain, are considering proposals which would ‘mandate’ every club to have at least one homegrown player on the pitch at all times. Not only that, said homegrown player would have to be promoted from the Under-20s or Under-21s.
A frankly ludicrous idea which, while seemingly coming from the right place, would force managers to promote young talent before they are ready, and potentially do more harm than good to their development.
“I think it makes more sense having the option, not the obligation,” Nuno counters.
“It’s one of the things where I think it’s helpful that you look at the academy and see the prospects that are coming, but you have to judge the best moment to put the boy on the pitch and not to rush things. If it becomes an obligation, it can be counter-productive.
“I don’t know how many we have in our squad, but we have a young squad!”
Ezra Mayers and Mohamadou Kante earned their chances
What would these new FIFA proposals mean for West Ham? 🤔
Clubs may be forced to have one U21 player on the pitch at all times…
Imagine, for instance, Nuno felt required to fast-track 18-year centre-back Airidas Golambeckis. He slips over and gives away a goal on his Premier League debut and, suddenly, his confidence is shot.
Captain of the club’s Under-21 side, Golambeckis trains regularly with West Ham’s first-team these days.
That is how Nuno seems intent on doing things. Give the most impressive young talent the chance alongside Jarrod Bowen and co at Rush Green. If they prove themselves ready – as Kante and Mayers did towards the back-end of 2025 – then an opportunity in a domestic cup clash or a brief Premier League cameo may be the reward.
Mayers has made ten senior appearances since his debut in December, including six in the first division. Mohamadou Kante has quite the reputation at West Ham himself, a superb start to the season in the Under-21s opening the door for the Frenchman to showcase his fearsome physical and technical qualities on a bigger stage.
Callum Marshall came off the bench at Arsenal in October; the reward for a flurry of goals with the reserves. He is now on loan at German second-tier outfit VFL Bochum, providing two goals and two assists in 14 games.
