Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed that Crysencio Summerville has suffered a calf injury and that West Ham United will “miss” him.

It is a major blow for West Ham United, who remain in the Premier League’s relegation zone on goal difference despite a recent revival under Nuno.

Indeed, Summerville suffered a calf injury during West Ham’s FA Cup win over Brentford and will duly miss a huge game on Saturday when Manchester City come to the Etihad Stadium.

What happens beyond that point is unclear. During his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Nuno said of Summerville: “We have Summerville that is out.

“We will assess him day by day and see how he goes but he’s not available for the game. We’re going to miss him as he’s an important player for us, but we will miss him for this game, for sure. It’s a calf issue.

“It can happen at any moment, but when he came in he was a big help for the team. He really did well as he has done many, many times for us in recent weeks.

“He was able stay in the game in extra-time and to help the team.”

Not having the Dutchman available will be the source of huge frustration to supporters here in east London.

Over recent weeks, Summerville has proven to be one of the best players in the Premier League.

His last nine outings have yielded five goals and one assist, and this recent push towards safety would not have been possible without him.

On a personal level, it’s a huge disappointment too. Summerville was set to be named in the Netherlands squad in March 2026, but it now remains to be seen if that really is a possibility.

Only a few months before the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, it feels like a particularly cruel blow.

Most concerningly, West Ham have not won a game without the former Leeds forward all season. He’s missed six games in total, and the Irons have lost every single one.
