The Hammers struggled during the first 10 minutes or so of their clash with the Whites last night.

We kept the scoreline at 0-0 and eventually found our rhythm, however.

West Ham were awarded a penalty after 21 minutes. Jesse Lingard was brought down inside the box and Mike Dean subsequently pointed to the spot.

The 28-year-old stepped forward to take the spot-kick. At the time, it was somewhat of a surprise considering the fact that Declan Rice cooly slotted home when we were last awarded a penalty against Sheffield United last month.

Lingard missed from 12 yards but fortunately he was on hand to tuck away the rebound.

Had the 28-year-old not been on hand to score after Illan Meslier saved the spot-kick, it could have been a very different story last night.

David Moyes responded to reporters when asked what he made of the indecent, as quoted but Football.London:

“As far as I was concerned I would have been happy for Declan to take it but Jesse had been practicing all week, so he was big enough and brave enough to take it and I wasn’t impressed by his penalty but I was impressed with the speed at which he got to the rebound and got it into the net, so I am pleased. He has had a big impact here and I am really pleased for him.”

It matters little now because we got the three points in the end.

We would suggest that Dec returns to penalty duties next time we are awarded one, however. If Mark Noble isn’t on the pitch of course.

Lingard can’t really be criticised in fairness. He has added so much to the way in which we play. And as Moyes said, his overall impact at West Ham has been hugely impressive.
