Michail Antonio faces frustrating wait after leaving West Ham as Qatar league makes delay decision

Michail Antonio’s move away from West Ham has not gone to plan due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The 35-year-old spent eight months without a club after leaving the Hammers at the end of his contract last summer.

He then decided to join Al-Sailiya SC in the Qatar Stars League last week despite interest from Championship club Charlton.

Antonio must be desperate to make his debut after months away from the game, but he may have to wait several weeks.

Michail Antonio faces wait to make Qatar league debut

Having officially signed for Al-Sailiya on 3 March, Antonio’s earliest opportunity to make his debut should have been against Al-Duhail SC on 5 March.

However, the Qatar Stars League recently announced that all games would be postponed until further notice due to the conflict.

This likely means that Al-Sailiya will also not play against Al-Shahania SC on 17 March or Al-Ahli SC on 3 April.

Antonio’s wait to make his debut in Qatar would then extend to over a month – not the start he would have hoped for.

Perhaps the former West Ham striker is already questioning whether he made the right move for his career.

Michail Antonio’s message to West Ham fans following departure

Although Antonio left West Ham months ago, he waited until he had finalised his next move before posting a goodbye message.

Antonio reflected on his decade-long spell in East London, which included several broken records and even European success.

“Ten years as a Hammer was unbelievable for me,” he wrote. “I managed to achieve so much that I would never have thought, and other people probably wouldn’t have thought that I was going to achieve.

“Being a European champion, becoming West Ham’s all-time goalscorer in the Premier League, joint top with the most headed goals in the calendar year.”

Hammers fans will surely keep an eye on Antonio’s career as long as he continues to play, but there is not much to report at the moment.
