A Mexican journalist has dropped a bombshell claim linking Edson Alvarez with Tottenham Hotspur amid a leaked report of a fallout at West Ham.

Tottenham look like they are going to be a problem for West Ham this summer.

The bitter rivals don’t like one another on or off the pitch, with no love lost between fans or the Spurs and Hammers’ boardrooms.

There has been an unofficial transfer embargo between West Ham and Tottenham for over 10 years now.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy used to be close friends with West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady – who assists former Spurs owner Alan Sugar on TV’s Apprentice.

Levy was also on good terms with former West Ham co-owner David Gold.

That was until Levy pulled the rug from under West Ham’s feet when they had agreed a deal with him to sign Emmanuel Adebayor back in 2015.

Gold criticised Levy at the time for reneging on the deal.

Spurs were then embroiled in a court case over obtaining Brady’s phone records during the battle between the two clubs for the London Stadium, as reported by the likes of The Guardian at the time.

Ice-cold relations mean there have been no deals between the two clubs for over 10 years.

But Spurs are starting to be linked with a number of Hammers stars, including Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and now Edson Alvarez.

West Ham’s owners laughed off talk of Spurs wanting Bowen last summer, insisting the captain is not for sale.

But new report from a worrying source claims West Ham’s weak financial position has prompted Tottenham to try again for Bowen.

Hammers fans would be up in arms if the club even considered that move.

Now Tottenham are being linked with yet another Hammer.

A Mexican journalist has dropped a Spurs embargo bombshell as an Alvarez fallout at West Ham is leaked.

Mexico captain Alvarez was absent from the West Ham squad for the draw with Southampton at the weekend.

The 27-year-old midfielder has slipped out of the team of late under Graham Potter amid rumours he will be one of the first to leave West Ham this summer.

Alvarez has often talked up a move away from West Ham – almost from the very moment he arrived in a £34m deal from Ajax in 2023.

Alvarez has started just two of West Ham’s last six games and has been subbed off by Potter in both.

Alvarez was then an unused sub in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield before being left out altogether for the draw with Saints.

Immediately after the game Alvarez sent a cryptic post on social media which suggested cracks were appearing in his relationship with Potter.

Now Mexican journalist Kery Ruiz claims Alvarez is definitely leaving West Ham this summer.

And Ruiz states that Tottenham have made their interest known this week.

“Edson Alvarez will not remain at West Ham United next season,” Ruiz said.

“The club has informed him that it can pursue options but is expecting offers above 35 million euros (£30m) to let him leave. There is interest from Monaco, Dortmund, and in recent days reports of Tottenham as well.”

That would require the Spurs and West Ham to bust the unofficial transfer embargo between the two clubs.

And it comes after a leak from a source close to West Ham’s owners claimed Alvarez has fallen out with Potter following Fabrizio Romano said Alvarez withdrew from the Southampton game citing he had a bad back.

That’s despite Potter not naming Alvarez among any injury concerns he had ahead of the match.

Claret and Hugh, who count majority owner David Sullivan among their close contacts, quoted a training ground source as having said Spurs target Alvarez “may never player for West Ham again” after a disagreement.

“Something happened before the Southampton game, there was a disagreement – and I wouldn’t be surprised if he never played for West Ham again,” the source is reported as saying.

Quite what Tottenham fans will make of the links is anyone’s guess.

‘Immobile’ Alvarez was singled out as West Ham’s biggest problem by pundits on Match of the Day earlier this season.

Many West Ham fans believe he lacks the power, pace and physicality to be a decent Premier League midfielder.

Alvarez also felt the wrath of West Ham fans for meekly pulling out of a header which resulted in Man City scoring during a 4-1 win, in what proved to be Julen Lopetegui’s final game at the start of the year.
