West Ham United centre-back Max Kilman looks like being the signing of the summer for us.

Max Kilman joined West Ham for around £40- million in the summer – a deal that Julen Lopetegui received heavy criticism for at the time.

However, the 27-year-old has proven everyone wrong so far – he’s been absolutely brilliant for the Hammers.

It’s no surprise to me that Lopetegui considered making him the new club captain before settling on Jarrod Bowen in the end.

In fact, the only shock is that Kilman wasn’t given the skipper’s armband ahead of Bowen.

The former Wolves man has been the Hammers’ best player by a long way so far this season, and I have every faith that he will continue his fine form throughout the season.

The question is, how far can the 6ft 4in centre-back go at West Ham?

West Ham defender Max Kilman makes bold statement

The former Maidenhead United defender has transformed the Hammers’ defence overnight.

He’s quite clearly a huge upgrade on Kurt Zouma, and I feel very comfortable with him marshalling our back four.

However, be prepared to be even more excited than you already are Hammers fans.

Kilman has opened up about his first couple of months at the London Stadium, when speaking to WHUFC.com.

“[The season] has gone really well so far,” Kilman confirmed. “My main focus was just to settle in, feel welcomed, and everyone here has made me feel really welcome, and I’m really grateful for that as well. But now I just need to get my head down and keep on improving, as there’s still a long way to go. It’s only been a few games, so I just want to carry that on and keep improving as a player.

“I definitely still think there’s more to come [from me]. I think it’s because I came into the game a little bit later than most other players, and I feel like I’m still improving as a player. I think I’ve got more to progress and I’ve not yet reached my peak.

How good is that to hear!

Max Kilman a potential West Ham legend

If the centre-back remains with the Hammers for another five years at least, he will undoubtedly become a legend at the club.

The fans already love Max, due to his passionate, fully committed performances.

He’s easily good enough to play for the England national team, especially given the current dearth of top-class English centre-backs.

At just 27, he has at least six or seven great years left ahead of him, probably more if he keeps himself in good shape.

West Ham signing Max Kilman for £40 million in the summer transfer window now seems like a great deal for us.

And as time goes on, I think that deal will look better and better.
