Matt Upson reveals concern over Crysencio Summerville at West Ham – ‘not enough’

Are some people going ever-so-slightly overboard regarding Crysencio Summerville’s impressive second season at West Ham United?

Matthew Upson, on co-commentary duty for Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford, appears to think the answer may be yes.

The Dutchman has certainly enjoyed a much happier campaign this time around.

When was the last time a West Ham player excited you so much?! 😍

Crysencio Summerville had gone 14 months and 25 matches between goals in a West Ham United shirt. Confidence, as they say, is a helluva thing. After ending a lengthy goal drought against QPR in the FA Cup third round, Summerville became the first since Jesse Lingard to score in five successive matches.

Yet, those seven strikes all came in a two-month purple patch from January to March, before an untimely injury disrupted his progress.

Matthew Upson wants more from West Ham United’s Crysencio Summerville

Can the former Leeds United winger prove himself capable of talismanic performances throughout an entire campaign?

And, with only ten goals in 81 Premier League appearances, is there a chance that he falls into the Dwight Gayle, Anthony Knockaert envelope; unplayable in the Championship, inconsistent in the top-flight?

“When he gets the ball, I get excited,” said Upson, who spent four years at Upton Park from 2007 to 2011.

“[But] for how well he plays and the positions he gets into, [five league goals] for me is not enough of a return. He should be getting into double figures.”

What a sorry old mess 😪 How have we let it slip AGAIN?!

Upson’s comments came moments after Summerville picked up the ball between the lines, drove forward but ballooned his finish well over the bar. He has not scored in any of his four appearances since returning to selection during the 4-0 thrashing of Wolves.

Hammers News can confirm that West Ham have no plans to sell Summerville, Mateus Fernandes, Jarrod Bowen or Konstantinos Mavropanos, as long as they finish on the right side of the dotted line down the bottom of the table.

West Ham could have gone five points clear of Spurs on the weekend. Instead, following a demoralising defeat at Brentford and Tottenham’s win away at Villa Park, the Hammers find themselves a point behind in 18th.
