If the success of West Ham United’s loan legion last season is anything to go by, Luton Town should benefit substantially from the arrival of Gideon Kodua from the Premier League outfit.

The former Under-18 captain was one of a number of Hammers starlets to make a very good impression during temporary spells in 2024/25.

Callum Marshall scored a brilliant solo goal during West Ham United’s 3-1 pre-season victory over Grasshopper Zurich on Sunday; Picking up where he left off at Huddersfield Town.

Patrick Kelly won the League Two title with Doncaster Rovers, meanwhile, as goalkeeper Mason Terry kept 17 clean sheets between the sticks for Hornchurch.

Gideon Kodua now makes the relatively short trip to Kenilworth Road with unfinished business and a desire to go one step further.

Matt Bloomfield explains why he brought West Ham United’s Gideon Kodua to Luton Town

Kodua suffered play-off heartbreak with Wycombe Wanderers back in May, losing to Charlton Athletic in a tight semi-final.

Now, the midfielder joins a Luton Town outfit hoping to return to the Championship at the first time of asking following successive relegations. He also reunites with a very familiar face.

“He’s a boy I love,” beams Luton boss Matt Bloomfield, speaking to the official Hatters website of a 20-year-old he worked with during two separate spells at Wycombe. “He’s got a steel, a resilience and a determination about him.”

An eye for the spectacular too.

Kodua captained West Ham to a 5-1 FA Youth Cup final victory over Arsenal in 2023, scoring a stunning long-range lob in the process.

“He came through as captain of West Ham’s Under-18s and we signed him twice before, so it stands to reason we think a lot of him,” Bloomfield adds, Kodua having joined 1999 Youth Cup champions Michael Carrick and Joe Cole in the Hammers history books.

“He offers options both at wing-back, in attacking wide areas and in a high ‘ten’ position, and brings good dribbling ability while linking play. He’s got pace and power.

“He’s a great lad, and he will be someone who our fans will love watching.”

Kodua delighted to reunite with former Wycombe Wanderers boss

As Bloomfield said, Kodua’s versatility is a key factor in his arrival. Across 35 Wycombe appearances, the youngster played on the left, on the right, through the middle as an attacking midfielder and also in a more defensive role.

The admiration between player and coach goes both ways, meanwhile.

“I thought a lot about my next move and narrowed it down, and this was the best option in terms of development and where I want to be,” explained a man who scored against Bloomfield’s Wycombe side in the EFL Trophy back in January 2024.

“There are good players here, a good manager and a good fanbase, so it was an easy decision. Obviously, the manager has played a big part. We met when I scored against Wycombe and a couple of days later he signed me.

“I’m a winner, and so is he, and he can see the direction I want to go – which is to the top.

“The season starts in just under two weeks, but I’m ready. I wish it could start now because I want to hit the ground running.”
