Liverpool fans swarm social media over West Ham behaviour at Anfield and they’re all saying the same thing

There were emotional scenes when West Ham took on Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday and the behaviour of fans has sparked a big reaction.

West Ham suffered their usual defeat to Liverpool – where they have only won once since the 1960s.

But the Hammers at least ended the game with a bit of pride as they put in a massively improved second half display to pull level, only to lose to the Reds late on through Virgil van Dijk’s header.

West Ham fans packed out the away end yet again despite their team offering them little to shout about over the last 16 months.

Liverpool fans were in buoyant mood after Mohamed Salah signed a new deal and with the win pushing them ever closer to another Premier League title.

West Ham fans get unfair bad rap

Hammers supporters often get a bad rap.

Their own club have threatened to ban them after an FA charge over an offensive chant at Chelsea back in February.

Sometimes a minority of West Ham fans don’t help themselves.

But the fanbase as a whole is one of the best around – as Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard even said in his autobiography after the Red’s win over West Ham in the 2006 FA Cup final.

While events on the pitch between Arne Slot and Graham Potter’s sides were massive in deciding the fate of the Premier League trophy, events off it were just as important.

Liverpool marked the 36th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy with a number of tributes in and around the game with West Ham.

It is the nearest fixture to April 15, when in 1989 the disaster at the FA Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest resulted in 97 supporters losing their lives.

A special mosaic in honour of those children, women and men was formed on the Kop prior to kick-off when a minute of silence was planned.

There were also tributes displayed on LED boards around the pitch and a commemorative matchday programme.

West Ham’s vice-captain, Liverpudlian Aaron Cresswell, also laid a wreath at the stadium’s Hillsborough Memorial ahead of the game to pay respects on behalf of the Hammers.

The tribal nature of football means supporters can often get involved in unsavoury and regrettable scenes.

Liverpool fans swarm social media over West Ham behaviour at Anfield

When sensitive and emotional matters such as Hillsborough are factored in to a football rivalry, it only takes one or two to ruin the reputation of the majority.

Now Liverpool fans have swarmed social media over West Ham behaviour at Anfield and they’re all saying the same thing.

As the two teams gathered on the pitch to observe a minute of silence to commemorate Hillsborough, it was impeccably observed in the stands by both sets of supporters.

Liverpool could not have wished for a better set of fans to be in the away end for the sombre occasion.

And Reds’ supporters flooded social media with messages of praise for West Ham and the supporters.

The general consensus being that ‘classy’ West Ham are a ‘proper club with proper fans’.

Even some family members of those who lost their lives commented on social media to thank West Ham for their immaculate behaviour.

Many remarked that the silence was so well observed ‘you could hear a pin drop around Anfield’.
