West Ham United are well in the race to sign one of the most highly decorated footballers on the planet this summer.
Julen Lopetegui has enjoyed a fantastic summer transfer window at West Ham, having overseen the arrivals of six new players.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be the next new arrival at the London Stadium, if we manage to agree personal terms with him.
However, there is another name in the mix being targeted to improve our leaky backline it seems.
Lopetegui has already signed Max Kilman from Wolves this summer, but the addition of another central defender is required.
Our defence cost us a top six finish last season, so the Spaniard has to change our profligate nature if he’s to oversee some progress at the club.
And he apparently has a very exciting name in mind for the job.
West Ham in race to sign Mats Hummels
According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, a late move from West Ham to sign Mats Hummels cannot be ruled out.
The Hammers’ interest in signing Hummels first broke yesterday.

However, Plettenberg then suggested that Brighton could beat West Ham to the 35-year-old German’s signature.
A move from West Ham for the superb centre-back definitely can’t be ruled out now though, and what a signing he’d be for us.
He has won pretty much everything there is to win in the game, with five Bundesliga titles, three DFB Pokals and a World Cup winner’s medal to his name.
Hummels is an elite centre-back, and he has proven over the past decade or so that he is truly world-class.
In 25 Bundesliga appearances for Borussia Dortmund last season, he averaged 2.1 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 3.2 clearances and 1.6 successful aerial duels per game
During those outings, the 35-year-old made 56.4 passes on average per match and registered a completion rate of 89.3% (Who Scored).
Mats Hummels would be an exceptional addition for West Ham in my view, especially if we get a deal for him done on a two-year contract.
The German is head and shoulders above Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd, and his winning mentality would take us to another level entirely.
Hummels would be a statement signing for the Hammers, and after Plettenberg’s bombshell claim, it seems as though we’re well in the race for his signature.
