Things go from bad to worse for Kalvin Phillips as he hits a new low ahead of his big West Ham chance at redemption.
It’s fair to say the only way is up now for Kalvin Phillips at West Ham.
Because things cannot get much worse for the January loan signing from Man City.
After 18 months in the cold at Man City, many expected Phillips might need time to get up to speed for the Hammers.
But it has been far worse than anyone could have imagined.
Phillips twice gave the ball away leading to goals against West Ham in his first couple of appearances.
The £50m midfielder was then sent off in West Ham’s defeat at Forest. That caused him to miss West Ham’s game against Brentford. And to rub salt in the wound that ended up being the club’s first win of 2024.
Things go from bad to worse for Phillips at West Ham
He was then on the bench for subsequent games until getting another opportunity against Burnley.
But Phillips – along with most of his teammates – put in a shocking first half performance as the Hammers trailed 2-0 at half-time to the league’s whipping boys. The loan midfielder was then hauled off at the break and West Ham went on to get things back to 2-2 and were unlucky not to win.
Despite controversially keeping his England place while on the bench at Man City, Phillips has now lost the confidence of Gareth Southgate after being snubbed for the latest Three Lions squad.
But now Phillips has hit a new low ahead of his big West Ham chance at redemption.

New low for midfielder ahead of big Hammers chance
If you’ve been following Hammers News you’ll know Phillips could be handed the opportunity to redeem himself in three of West Ham’s next four games.
And they’re all big ones.
Crucial Irons star Edson Alvarez has been hit by a three-game ban blow.
The Mexican was already banned by UEFA for the first leg of West Ham’s Europa League quarter-final against Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.
And a 10th Premier League booking of the season last time out means El Machin will miss vital games against Newcastle this weekend and bitter rivals Spurs next Tuesday.
Phillips named lowest rated midfielder in the Premier League
But ahead of his big chance Phillips has been officially named as the lowest ranked midfielder in the entire Premier League so far this year.
WhoScored is the world’s biggest football analysis site. And it has revealed Phillips has hit a new low.
Of the 290 players to have made five or more appearances in the Premier League in 2024, Kalvin Phillips is the lowest rated with a score of 5.91/10.
Phillips just can’t catch a break since joining West Ham can he?
But there’s only one way to change the narrative – by putting things right on the pitch and proving people wrong.
The ex Leeds man now has the perfect chance to do just that in massive matches over the next few weeks.
There could just be some light at the end of this dark tunnel for Phillips yet.
