Jermain Defoe was a guest in the Sky Sports studio for the West Ham United vs Wolves clash on Monday night.

The West Ham fans and Jermain Defoe haven’t seen eye-to-eye since he left us to join Tottenham after our relegation back in 2004.

There is certainly no love lost between the two parties.

Defoe handed in a transfer request when he really needed him most, on the day the Hammers were relegated from the Premier League 21 years ago.

He turned his back on us to join our fiercest rivals in the Premier League.

He has never been forgiven by West Ham fans and has always received a hostile welcome when returning to either Upton Park or the London Stadium.

After his playing days had ended, Defoe incurred the wrath of the Hammers fans further still when he urged Declan Rice to leave the London Stadium, before he eventually joined Arsenal.

I’m sure he looks back at his actions as a young man and realises that he could have handled things a lot better.

Does he hold any bitterness in his heart towards the Hammers faithful though?

Defoe actually spoke really highly of West Ham as a club during his Monday Night Football appearance.

His punditry work was enjoyable to listen to and informative.

But what does he really think of the Hammers fans? That’s what we all want to know wasn’t it!

Defoe was asked by Sky Sports host Dave Jones ahead of the game how the Hammers players can turn things around this season (December 9th, 7:54pm).

And he came out with a fairly surprising response.

The former Hammers hitman said, “Do it for those fans. They’re good fans they always travel and support the team and they deserve that.”

Fair play to Defoe, and maybe it’s time to let bygones be bygones.

The way he acted in order to force through an exit from the club back in 2003/04 left a lot to be desired.

However, he was still a very young man who was clearly very poorly advised at the time.

And it seems like he harbours no ill-feeling towards the Hammers fans.

Maybe the West Ham fans will feel slightly different about Jermain Defoe after his admission about us on Sky Sports last night.
