Leading Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has been dissecting where it has all gone wrong for West Ham and he lays much of the blame at the door of Graham Potter and the owners.

West Ham now look highly likely to be relegated from the Premier League following back-to-back defeats to Brentford and Arsenal.

Much of the conversation following those defeats has revolved around West Ham’s bad luck with officiating and missed chances.

The Hammers looked relegation certainties when they lost at home to Forest at the start of the year.

But Nuno Espirito Santo led a revival which saw West Ham close a 13-point gap on Spurs to overhaul their bitter rivals with a handful of games to go.

The battle for survival has turned back in Tottenham’s favour, though, with West Ham needing a minor Spurs miracle to stay in the Premier League.

West Ham cannot say the warning signs were not there last season when they avoided finishing 17th on the final day.

When the dust settles on this season, the inquest will begin.

Especially as the road back to the top flight could be a long and dark one for the Hammers after West Ham’s owners made the consequences of relegation clear.

Most Hammers fans have already decided where the blame sits for the disaster that is unfolding in east London.

And it seems top Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher agrees with them.

West Ham have gone from a European trophy to the brink of relegation and financial turmoil in the space of three years.

Potter and owners to blame for West Ham’s downfall says Carragher

Now Carragher has named Graham Potter and the owners among the chief architects of West Ham’s downfall.

Speaking in his preview for Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher pointed to the owners making poor managerial appointments and getting involved in recruitment as key reasons behind the fact West Ham’s squad simply isn’t good enough.

Carragher also said Potter simply did not work but reserved praise for his replacement Nuno for his impact.

“West Ham haven’t got a very good squad,” Carragher said.

“They haven’t got the players. And actually, I think the job Nuno has done since he’s come in, he’s done quite well with that squad of players.

“The last couple of results have just not gone for them, unfortunately. Yesterday, they took the best team in the country to the last kick of the game. The one the week before (at Brentford), we highlighted on Monday Night Football. They got beat badly but it wasn’t a bad performance. I think they were a little bit unfortunate there.

“But I think if West Ham go down, the reason they’ve gone down is because the squad, that’s been put together over a number of years by different managers and the hierarchy there, it’s because it’s really poor, and also, it just didn’t work out for Graham Potter at all at the start of the season.”

It is safe to say the vast majority of West Ham fans will agree with Carragher given ongoing protests aimed at removing the current board.

Many fans also felt the club should have parted company with Potter last summer after a massively underwhelming first six months in charge.
