West Ham United defender Max Kilman has been bizarrely criticised by Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg.
Max Kilman joined West Ham for around £40 million in the summer – a deal that Julen Lopetegui received heavy criticism for at the time.
However, he has proved himself to be a sensational signing for the Hammers. Lopetegui even considered making him the new club captain, before Jarrod Bowen was eventually handed the armband.
The West Ham head coach knew the central defender very well indeed, having coached him during his spell in charge of Wolves.
And now it’s quite clear for everyone to see why the Spaniard pushed so hard to bring Kilman to the London Stadium in the summer.
The centre-back is already a hugely popular player amongst the Hammers fans. He has been faultless for us so far this season, and that’s what makes the latest criticism of him so strange.

The former Wolves man has been hands down our best player this season.
He has marshalled our backline with aplomb, and has been an absolute colossus for us.
That didn’t stop one journalist with high level connections at West Ham having a pop at the 27-year-old though.
Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg took to his official X account last night, and chose to take a cheap shot at Max.
“West Ham and Kilman get away with one at Craven Cottage. Little evidence that Lopetegui’s ideas are working yet. Outplayed by Fulham today and lucky to draw.“
How strange is that from Steinberg? Utterly bizarre if you ask me.
Kilman was rock solid for us once again yesterday, and if anyone should have been criticised, it’s Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Max Kilman, West Ham’s best player this season
If the centre-back remains with the Hammers for another five years at least, he will undoubtedly become a legend at the club.
The fans already love Max, due to his passionate, fully committed performances.
He’s easily good enough to play for the England national team, especially given the current dearth of top-class English centre-backs.
At just 27, he has at least six or seven great years left ahead of him, probably more if he keeps himself in good shape.
West Ham signing Max Kilman for £40 million in the summer transfer window now seems like a great deal for us.
And as time goes on, I think that deal will look better and better.
