Legendary Italy and Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has made an astonishing claim about West Ham United.

There has been much debate about West Ham and their performance levels this season.

Many fans feel the Hammers have the star quality and team to be playing a much better brand of football.

With the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta, Tomas Soucek, Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse and Emerson at David Moyes’ disposal that is a valid argument.

As a result of West Ham’s inability to play with more style, Moyes is a man under pressure to keep his job beyond next summer.

West Ham fans feel the team should be really pushing to compete for the European spots in a Premier League where several top teams are finding it more difficult this term.

The Hammers have enhanced their reputation after winning the Europa Conference League back in June – their first major trophy for 43 years.

Moyes’ side beat Serie A outfit Fiorentina in that unforgettable game.

And they’d be a match for anyone in that league according to one very influential player.

In an interview with The Athletic, Chiellini was asked about Gianluca Scamacca following his failed spell with the Hammers.

And he claimed there was no shame in it because West Ham are just as good as the best team in Serie A.

“Playing in England is very hard for everyone because physically, you have to be more than 100 per cent,” Chiellini said.

“It’s much better than any other league in the world. Very few players can adapt in a short time. They don’t give time to players, especially young players…

“I don’t think so (it was a culture thing that saw Scamacca fail at West Ham). It would have been the same if Scamacca went to Juventus or Inter or Milan, he needed time.

“Probably in Italy, it’s easier because he knows the league. But West Ham are on the same level as the best team in Serie A.

“Have you seen (Chris) Smalling or (Fikayo) Tomori or (Ruben) Loftus-Cheek? Physically they are three times better than most players in Italy. Physically they have a supremacy that can permit them to destroy the opponents. That’s not something that is easy to figure out.”

So would West Ham win Serie A? Chiellini’s comments suggest they would be in the mix.

Being in the top six in England would be a good place to start.
