Harry Redknapp weighs in on David Moyes situation with message to West Ham chief David Sullivan

Former Hammers boss Harry Redknapp has weighed in on the David Moyes situation with a message to West Ham chief David Sullivan.

It’s been another tumultuous 24 hours in the wacky old world of West Ham.

When West Ham left the Boleyn Ground in 2016, Mark Noble – the club’s captain at the time and now sporting director – declared ‘we ain’t run like a circus no more’.

Anyone watching events unfold around the Hammers over the last two weeks might beg to differ.

West Ham have been treading a thin line between due diligence on a potential David Moyes successor and blasting the managerial market with scattergun.

That’s if you believe everything you read in the football gossip columns at least.

The Hammers have been linked with just the 15 managers in the last two weeks.

Majoriry owner David Sullivan is said to have allegedly held talks with both Ruben Amorim and Julen Lopetegui about replacing Moyes.

West Ham manager search continues

Sullivan and technical director Tim Steidten have certainly been busy. Journalist Graeme Bailey confirmed the club has a dozen names on a shortlist should Moyes depart.

That is looking ever more likely after The Daily Mail claimed Steidten has been banned from the first team changing rooms at the club’s training ground and the London Stadium while he searches for potential replacements for Moyes.

West Ham responded to Hammers News on those claims yesterday.

But it seems West Ham are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

Of course many observers – West Ham fans included – will feel the whole thing could and should have been handled a lot better.

Moyes on the brink after Steidten ‘ban’

But had West Ham sat back and waited until the end of the season to start looking at potential candidates, they would have been accused of negligence.

By being proactive – which is a necessity given the major rebuild required on the playing side this summer – and speaking to managers and intermediaries, leaks are inevitable.

One thing most supporters seem to agree upon, though, is that a decision on Moyes needs to be brought forward, agreed upon and announced before the last home game of the season.

So that, if he is leaving, the Scot gets the send-off he deserves after doing an excellent job overall in the last four-and-a-half years.

For most West Ham fans Moyes’ tenure has run its course.

Fed up with his risk averse approach, West Ham have also stopped getting results with just four wins in 22 games in 2024 so far.

Not to mention no clean sheets in 14 league games – the club’s worst record since 2020.

And throw in the fact no side outside the Premier League’s bottom three have conceded more goals than the Hammers.

Coupled with the fact Moyes has overseen a failure to future-proof the current squad and it seems like a parting of the ways is inevitable.

Yet those calling for change are constantly told to ‘be careful what you wish for’.

Redknapp weighs in with message to Sullivan

While the likes of Villa, Spurs, Palace, Brighton and Bournemouth are permitted to want good football and results, West Ham it seems are not.

Stuart Pearce became the latest to infuriatingly tell West Ham fans to be careful what they wish for recently.

Now another can be added to the growing list.

Harry Redknapp has weighed in on the Moyes situation with a message to West Ham chief Sullivan.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, Redknapp has – you guessed it – told West Ham fans to be careful what they wish for, calling the situation ‘sad’.

And he has even cast doubt over the club’s ability to find a top class replacement.

“Yeah, it’s sad,” Redknapp said.

“David has done a great job there, but for whatever reason, it seems, you know, there’s a, I don’t know what David Sullivan and David Moyes’s relationship is, but it does look like there’s going be a parting of the ways.

“Careful what you wish for. Who’s going to get that job? I don’t know.

“It will be interesting to see who they have got in mind.”

One of the 15 names linked with West Ham of late is Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna.

Yesterday it was reported Brighton are rivalling West Ham for McKenna. It was also suggested he may be lured away even if Ipswich are promoted to the Premier League given how difficult survival will be due to financial constraints.

Redknapp stated McKenna was his manager of the year.

“(McKenna is) Manager of the Year (for me),” Redknapp added.

“He has got to be the Manager of the Year. What a job he has done.”
