Freddie Sears was supposed to be the next big thing at West Ham United when he burst onto the scene 17 years ago as a fresh-faced teenager.

However, he left the Hammers on numerous loan spells before joining Colchester United on a permanent deal in 2012.

Freddie Sears never fully realised his potential at West Ham, but he was a fan favourite nonetheless.

And in all fairness to him, he had a decent club career in the end, with 103 goals and 50 assists to his name in 553 games for eight different clubs.

Only three of those goals came for the Hammers though, with the majority of his career spent in the lower reaches of English football.

Sears clearly still has a burning desire to be involved in the game.

And he’s back in East London now, albeit only on a temporary basis.

So Sears is back in East London.

However, his return is not in a playing capacity.

Sears completed his UEFA B licence at West Ham, and has since been involved in the Academy U12s coaching team, according to the club’s official website.

Whether that means he will get a role within the club on a more permanent basis remains to be seen.

He is currently coming into Chadwell Heath one day per week to work with the under-12s. Sears said:

“I come into Chadwell Heath one day a week for the time being, coaching the U12s. I then sometimes get involved with the U15s. The other day, me and Nobes trained with them. That was really cool, rolling back the years! It’s such a good environment, it’s like nothing’s changed!

Freddie Sears knows what it’s all about to break through to the West Ham first-team from the academy ranks.

Perhaps he will have a key role to play in helping some of our talented youngsters do what he wasn’t able to – forge a career in the Premier League with the Hammers.

One thing’s for sure, it’s a lot harder to break through now than it was then. That being said, we definitely have some talented youngsters who have the ability to makes names for themselves.

Hopefully Sears will be able to play some kind of a positive role for the club going forward.
