So it’s nice to see one of his replacements relishing being at West Ham.
West Ham finally announced their first signing of the summer transfer window on Thursday with the unveiling of Mexico defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez from Ajax in a deal reportedly worth up to £34m.
It is the first step in a two – or possibly three – player plan to replace Rice in the Hammers midfield.

But it came just two days before the first game of the new campaign against Bournemouth.
Alvarez was signed in plenty of time to meet the registration deadline for the opener. But having not trained for the best part of three weeks, David Moyes elected not to risk his new man.
Alvarez has been very emotional about sealing a move to West Ham and the Premier League having missed out last summer when a deal to join Chelsea collapsed.
The 25-year-old says he knew what a big club West Ham is and what a fantastic following they have from afar.
But it seems even he was taken aback by what he has walked into at West Ham – quite literally.

Behind the scenes video footage of Alvarez’s first day at West Ham shows the midfielder being given a tour of his new home ground for the first time in the flesh.
And he was clearly impressed judging by what he instantly said as he first laid eyes on where he will be playing his football from now on.
“Look at this bro,” Alvarez can be heard saying as he pursed his lips in amazement, with his agent responding by saying: ‘Crazy’.
Proof, if it were needed, that West Ham really are massive.
Although it will be interesting if he is as impressed when he visits Rush Green for the first time.
