West Ham United’s most in-form goalgetter right now is not Jarrod Bowen, Taty Castellanos or Crysencio Summerville. Instead, it is none other than free-scoring centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Heading into Saturday’s clash with Everton, the giant defender is on a run of three goals in his last four Premier League outings.

Shortly after Mavropanos ended the Hammers’ 86-game wait for a goal from a centre-half in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City, the former Arsenal man became the first defender since James Collins in 2013 to score twice in one game while wearing a West Ham United shirt.

And the manner in which Konstantinos Mavropanos beat Alphonse Areola during a small-sided head-to-head at the club’s Rush Green training ground suggests the possibility of a fourth goal in five league outings should not be dismissed.

Controlling a chipped pass from Tomas Soucek, Mavropanos took one touch to set himself before fizzing a dipping volley into the bottom corner from what must have been around 20 yards out.

As his well-taken strike in the 4-0 battering of Wolves demonstrated – Mavropanos has outscored Alexander Isak, Noni Madueke, Alejandro Garnacho, Randal Kolo Muani and more in the Premier League this season – he can be as lethal with his feet as he is with his head inside the opposition penalty area.

Nuno Espirito Santo praised Mavropanos’ development during his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon.

Build on a run of five clean sheets in nine games, add another goal or two to the collection, and the formerly maligned defender may soon be part of the Hammer of the Year conversations.

“Dinos is improving day by day and we are delighted,” Nuno said of a man who has reached a whole new level since being partnered with the dependable, experienced Axel Disasi.

“I think [Disasi] has been very helpful since he joined. He’s been performing really well. ‘JC’ [Jean-Clair Todibo] was also playing well in that moment. We have Max [Kilman too], and we are positive that we have options at centre-back.”
