David Moyes has launched a staunch defence of West Ham star Vladimir Coufal in the face of criticism after the Man City defeat.

While West Ham put in an excellent first half performance as they led Manchester City 1-0, some players have been criticised for their second half displays.

Nayef Aguerd, Michail Antonio, Kurt Zouma, Vladimir Coufal and Said Benrahma have been criticised by some fans and pundits after Man City turned the game on its head to win 3-1.

Lucas Paqueta has also been criticised by some after making a beeline to embrace Pep Guardiola and his staff in the wake of their collapsed move for the Brazilian.

Doku steals the show in comeback win for Man City at West Ham

For West Ham losing star man Edson Alvarez was a big factor as the Hammers conceded the second and third goals not long after he was forced off near the 70th minute.

There was no doubting who the star of the show for Man City as Jeremy Doku put in a breathtaking performance full of pace, power and trickery.

Coufal has shackled some of the best left wingers the Premier League has to offer during his time with West Ham.

But he had a tough assignment against Doku.

Ironically Coufal got the better of the Belgian to set up West Ham’s opener in the first half.

The Czech star was given the runaround after the break, though, backing off almost to his own goal line as Doku levelled within a minute of the restart.

Some West Ham fans and pundits have been critical of Coufal for failing to deal with Doku – who David Moyes confirmed was a Hammers transfer target before he joined Man City for £55m last month.

But Moyes has launched a staunch defence of West Ham star Coufal in the face of criticism after the defeat to Man City.

The Scot admitted Coufal ‘got done’ by Doku but insists he had done a brilliant job otherwise.

“In the main I actually thought our right-back done a brilliant job,” Moyes said on Coufal after the game.

“Brilliant at sticking to the task you know trying to deal with it the best he possibly could.

“And he just got done on one occasion really which was the one what really mattered.”

Moyes is right to defend Coufal.

West Ham fans have justifiably called on the club to sign a new modern, young, pacy right-back who can compete with and eventually succeed Coufal.

But even the top right-backs around would have struggled to handle Doku at the weekend. He was unplayable at times. Coufal won’t let that one game impact his confidence and nor should he.

Other assignments from here on out will feel like a piece of cake for the Czech warrior after his Doku encounter.
