West Ham boss David Moyes could secure a real coup by beating Tottenham to the signing of Wilfried Singo

David Moyes hails West Ham owners ahead of historic Europa League semi-final

Hammers boss David Moyes has hailed West Ham’s owners ahead of the club’s historic Europa League semi-final.

One of the biggest matches in the history of West Ham is now upon us.

West Ham saw off Lyon in the quarter-finals while Frankfurt beat Barcelona to set up a repeat of the European Cup Winners Cup semi-final of 1976.

And ahead of the game Moyes has made a point of praising West Ham’s divisive owners.

When Moyes returned to West Ham nearly two and a half years ago he took over a club torn in two.

Resentment from Hammers fans towards co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold had reached fever pitch – quite literally – a few years before when some supporters stormed the field of play in a game against Burnley.

And when Moyes returned things were very much turning toxic again.

But the Scot has taken West Ham from relegation candidates to within two games of a major European final in just over two years.

As results have improved dramatically on the pitch so too has the atmosphere at the much-criticised London Stadium.

Vocal fan resentment towards Sullivan and Gold has also subsided with West Ham’s improved fortunes.

Some fans will never forgive Sullivan, Gold and vice-chairman Karren Brady for the move to the London Stadium.

But the arrival of Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky as West Ham’s second biggest stakeholder in November has given even those of the GSBOUT standpoint hope for a new era.

And the Scot says recent goings-on at other clubs – such as the outrageous ESL plans that were being concocted in secret and which so outraged football fans, as well as the Roman Abramovich situation at Chelsea – go to show West Ham have good owners (BBC Sport).

“Thankfully the owners came back,” Moyes said in an in-depth interview with BBC Sport ahead of the Frankfurt semi-final clash.

“I am really grateful to them (the West Ham owners). We can all make mistakes in life but they were big enough to come back and get me. I was really close to another Premier League job at that time…

“I knew if I could be given a little bit of time at West Ham, there was so much room to improve. Loads of things had to be changed. I still think there is.

“I think we’ve got really good owners! Compared to what some of the other clubs are putting up with just now, I’m saying ‘I’m really fortunate with what I have here at West Ham (as owners)’.

“I’ve got to say we’ve got a really open board. (Now) we have a great group of supporters who are right behind the team and are backing the club. That makes a huge difference.”

West Ham’s owners were heavily criticised for failing to back Moyes by signing the players he wanted in the January window with the Hammers having so much to play for.

But the Hammers boss also defended the West Ham board on that front saying this season proves spending money is not always the answer.

“Recruitment is really important,” Moyes added.

“It is easy to waste money and you will probably lose your job if you bring in signings that don’t work.

“If ever there was a year that showed spending money might not always be the way forward, this year would probably prove that.”

‘Out of hand’ Athletic suggests West Ham have edge over Man United for £60m star.

West Ham star responds emphatically to comments Troy Deeney made about him.

Moyes says he would be amazed if star played again this season.
