David Moyes has been criticised by legend Frank McAvennie over his handling of the ‘strange’ West Ham situation involving Maxwel Cornet.

West Ham look set to be without £17.5m summer signing Cornet yet again for this weekend’s clash with Chelsea.

There was relief recently when Cornet posted a video showing what appeared to be the West Ham star doing advanced rehabilitation work after his rare calf issue.

The case of Cornet is somewhat typical of West Ham’s rotten luck with new signings and injuries.

When West Ham’s £17.5m summer signing Cornet was forced off just 35 minutes into his first Premier League start under Moyes at the beginning of October with a calf injury, it was expected he would be back in a week or two.

But while Ings made a speedy return to the side within two weeks, Cornet remains out over four months on.

And how the Hammers could do with a player like Cornet bringing pace, power and more goals to the side as they battle for survival.

Cornet returned to West Ham’s Rush Green training ground last week ahead of the trip to Newcastle.

But Moyes then revealed he was not in a condition to train with the team and had ‘returned to France’. The Scot said Cornet was no longer feeling his calf issue but was only 60-70 per cent fit.

Fans have been somewhat puzzled then as to why the player would ‘go back to France’ if he needs to work on his fitness?

Now Moyes has been criticised by West Ham legend McAvennie over handling of the ‘strange’ Cornet situation.

“I heard last week David Moyes saying he doesn’t know about the player and he doesn’t know when he’s coming back,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“I am finding that hard to believe, whether it was just a comment from David or if he really doesn’t have anything to do with injured players.

“I don’t know because when I played the manager knew exactly what everyone’s fitness levels were. Moyes may have been trying to be sarcastic, I don’t know.

“If he was in France getting the treatment I would be in contact with him every two or three days so it’s a strange one for Moyes not to know anything about this, which makes me think someone is pulling strings down there. There’s something wrong. Because he’s a decent player.”

McAvennie makes some salient points.

And the reporters with access to Moyes’ press conferences need to start asking the questions supporters actually want answers to.

Instead of some of the inane, repetitive, unimaginative tripe that gets put to the managers week in, week out by the same selected few.
