Darren Bent has suggested that West Ham fans would prefer their team to finish in fifth spot in the Premier League table this season rather than winning the FA Cup, when speaking on talkSPORT this morning.

The Hammers are currently riding high in sixth spot in the table, just one point adrift of the top four.

Meanwhile, David Moyes’s men have the chance to progress into the quarter finals of the FA Cup ahead of their fifth round tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford tonight.

Darren Bent: High Premier League finish more important than FA Cup glory for West Ham fans

The Hammers have enjoyed a wonderful campaign thus far. David Moyes has worked wonders at the London Stadium.

West Ham have surprised most people this season after many predicted we would struggle.

And Darren Bent told talkSPORT that because of the Hammers’ impressive start to the season, their fans would prefer finishing fifth to lifting the FA Cup:

“This is such a difficult one because they are absolutely flying in the league and the chance to see West Ham back in Europe is appealing to a lot of the fans. With the FA Cup, they are in the FA Cup again next year. Considering how tough the Premier League is, imagine if they finish fifth this season! What an achievement that would be for West Ham. Me personally, I would like to see West Ham winning the FA Cup. But if they were to win the FA Cup and all of a sudden finished ninth, it’s a little bit (disappointing). Where they are in the league and how well they’ve played, I’m going to say for West Ham supporters, I think finishing fifth in the league, I think they’d prefer that than winning the FA Cup.”

I can only speak for myself, but Bent has surely got this one wrong.

West Ham haven’t won a trophy since their FA Cup success in 1980, aside from the Intertoto Cup in 1999 of course!

The Hammers fans are desperate to see David Moyes’s side win a trophy. Certainly those who haven’t seen it happen in their life-time…me included.

Winning the FA Cup is something we would remember forever. And if we had the option of lifting silverware in May or finishing fifth in the Premier League, surely the decision would be an easy one.

Darren Bent doesn’t seem to think so, however…
