Alan Shearer was thrilled with the performance of one West Ham player in their 2-2 draw against Bournemouth over the weekend.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side took a two-goal lead in the first half, but failed to hold on to it and could only settle for a point.

However, that point proved sufficient for them to end the weekend outside the relegation zone.

Alan Shearer blown away by Callum Wilson display

Callum Wilson bagged a brace in the first half against his former club, justifying West Ham’s decision to sign him in the summer.

Speaking to the Premier League website, Shearer was impressed with how the English forward led the line and believed that he was sorely missed when Nuno decided to take him off in the 52nd minute.

He said: “Scored two excellent goals and led the line very well. West Ham missed his presence up top when he was taken off early in the second half, as they went on to lose their 2-0 lead.”

Who do YOU think is the Hammers' best-ever bargain signing?

A lot of eyebrows were raised when the 33-year-old arrived at the London Stadium on a free transfer, especially after Michail Antonio’s departure.

Antonio no longer being at the club meant that it was important to bring in a number nine who could lead the line with aplomb this season.

However, thus far, the free transfer has been justified with Callum Wilson already scoring four league goals for the Hammers.

Will West Ham still sign a new striker in January?

Fullkrug already seems to have checked out and his departure will leave the Irons a striker shy in the summer.

Despite Wilson’s ability to find the back of the net this season, it is very likely that West Ham will dip into the market to bring in a new striker.

Nuno knows that at 33, Wilson may not be able to start week in and week out, especially when games come thick and fast.

He’ll also want someone in their prime so that the new signing can take the burden off the former Bournemouth striker and he can revert to playing as an impact substitute.
