West Ham’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka has made history with the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the 2026 World Cup.

DR Congo qualified for their first World Cup in 52 years after beating Jamaica in a play-off three months ago.

They were then handed a difficult group (K) against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan.

Wan-Bissaka’s team were considered huge underdogs in their opening game against Portugal, but the oddsmakers were completely wrong.

How Aaron Wan-Bissaka helped DR Congo earn a historic World Cup point

DR Congo have only participated in the World Cup once before (Germany 1974), exiting at the group stage.

They lost all three games without even scoring a goal: 2-0 to Scotland, 9-0 to Yugoslavia and 3-0 to Brazil.

Well, not only did DR Congo score their first goal against Portugal, but they also earned their first point in World Cup history.

Joao Neves’ sixth-minute goal was cancelled out by Yoanne Wissa’s header in the final moments of the first half.

DR Congo held on in the second half despite having only 25 percent possession, though they also created a few chances.

The Congolese defence, including Wan-Bissaka at right wing-back, kept Ronaldo extremely quiet throughout the game.

Meanwhile, Wan-Bissaka won his individual battle with Manchester United and Arsenal target Rafael Leao when he came on.

The defender’s resolute performance will only have helped his chances of earning a Premier League move this summer.

Wan-Bissaka reportedly wants out of West Ham following their relegation, with David Moyes’ Everton linked with a move for him.

The Hammers will be hoping to receive a fee of around £15 million for the 28-year-old after a strong World Cup display.
