What Julen Lopetegui was doing on the touchline during Manchester City game was alien to the West Ham fans

Julen Lopetegui can leave the London Stadium with his head held high tonight, after Manchester City beat West Ham 3-1.

In my opinion, West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui has a genuine chance of achieving some real success in charge at the London Stadium.

The West Ham manager is clearly a very ambitious man, and he proved that with his business in the summer transfer window.

Much time and patience will be required though. These things don’t happen overnight, and we all should be getting behind him now.

With nine new arrivals at the club this summer, the Hammers will undoubtedly be a work in progress throughout the first half of the season at the very least.

However, showing signs of improvement and progress along the way will be key for Lopetegui to gain the trust and continued support of the fans.

There’s no point in offering tunnel-visioned support if there is nothing to show that we’re actually moving forward.

And something that happened today proved to me that we are very much on the right track with the 58-year-old at the helm.

What Julen Lopetegui did on the touchline during West Ham vs Manchester City

It was a decent performance from the Hammers today in my opinion, in spite of a few players not performing to the levels that we expect.

Manchester City are an incredible side, so there is no shame in losing to them by a couple of goals.

And I actually think there was one huge positive on display from West Ham today.

The way that we pressed the Man City players high up the pitch at certain points of the game was a pleasure to watch, and it made such a refreshing change.

Throughout both halves, Lopetegui was constantly shouting and gesturing to his players to press the Manchester City defenders and midfielders high up the pitch.

It is so refreshing to see the Hammers play like that. We’ve been bereft of a team that aggressively presses so high up the pitch for years, perhaps decades.

And now we have it.

Seeing Lopetegui scream and point at his players to press a team as good as Man City felt alien to the Hammers fans watching on.

It was something that we just didn’t see under David Moyes, and even Manuel Pellegrini before him to a certain extent.

The results might not come straight away, especially because Lopetegui has so many new players to bed into his team.

However, I can promise you that if we all stick with the Spaniard, we will achieve success in the not too distant future.

The way that the West Ham boys harried and pressed from the front inside the first five minutes of the match against Manchester City today got everyone inside the London Stadium up off their seats.

That’s how you generate an atmosphere. Now it’s up to the players to keep working hard in training so that they develop more of an understanding with one another on the pitch.

Exciting times lie ahead for the Hammers, I’m sure of it.
