Callum Wilson only played the final half-hour or so during West Ham United’s 1-0 defeat by Fulham in the 18th matchday of the Premier League season, replacing Crysencio Summerville in the process.
Yet, the fact that Wilson helped produce arguably more goalscoring openings than Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta or the aforementioned Crysencio Summerville mustered throughout the entire game sums up another blunt, toothless performance from a team whose fate is starting to feel increasingly inevitable.
Captain Bowen only needs seven goals to equal Michail Antonio as the most prolific Premier League goalscorer in West Ham United’s history.
The chances of him making history before 2025/26 comes to an end feel slimmer now than ever.
How do West Ham solve a PROBLEM like Summerville?
Guess how many games it's been since his last goal…
Let’s just hope Bowen is loyal enough to stick around and spend at least one of his prime years in the Championship…
And if Lucas Paqueta summed up West Ham’s ‘tame’ showing at Manchester City seven days ago, nothing epitomised their display against Fulham better than Crysencio Summerville between the 51st minute and his 56th minute removal.
West Ham United fans take issue with Crysencio Summerville in Fulham loss
Summerville has not scored a Premier League goal since Julen Lopetegui got the better of Erik ten Hag in October 2024. His only assist this season, meanwhile, came when Nuno Espirito Santo was lining up against Graham Potter in August.
Summerville really should have doubled his tally when breaking through into the final third on Saturday, only to delay his final ball. When the pass finally arrived, it was under-hit and easily dealt with.
For a £30 million forward signed to turn counter-attacking opportunities into goals, or failing that shots, this was another damning afternoon. One which took his dreadful West Ham average to a goal every 36 games and an assist every 12.

“Summerville, it’s time to go broski,” one fan wrote after the former Leeds talisman failed to cap a storming run with a simple through ball.
“Summerville with the [misplaced] same pass every week,” another fumed, on X.
“That’s absolutely shocking from Summerville.”
“I cannot believe how bad Summerville is. How do you under hit that pass?
“No end product at all.”
“Time to admit Leeds have had our pants down with Summerville!”
Tony Gale was begging Summerville to take his shot earlier
To make matters worse, he would then dally and delay mere moments later as the chance to end that 14-month goal drought came and went.
“The ball sat up for him, he wanted one touch too many,” frustrated Hammers legend Tony Gale said from his position in the commentary gantry. “It’s vital to take that touch and get the shot away, but he wanted that extra touch and got charged down.”
“Summerville, shoot earlier man. What is going on?,” a similarly irate fan wrote in response as yet another opening was squandered.
“Summerville really just took two touches on what should’ve been a volley. What is with this guy?”
“Summerville cannot score.”
What should Nuno be telling his players at full-time? 💭
And what do you want to see against Wolves?
“Summerville, you have to shoot early there!”
“I actually can’t keep defending Summerville.”
“Summerville is driving me insane, he wastes so many great opportunities. Thank God Wilson has come on to replace him.”
“Glad Summerville came off, end product is painful.”
“Disappointed with that Summerville performance to be honest. Always takes one touch too many.”
“Summerville is a very frustrating player.”
In years gone by and relegation battles of recent past, neutrals often claimed that Jarrod Bowen’s ruthless finishing could be sufficient to keep heads above water. Certainly, a 15-goal a season forward is often the distance between coming 18th and 17th.
But with Bowen a shadow of his usual self and Summerville failing to ease the crushing burden on his aching shoulders, this feels like a West Ham damsel crying out for a hero who is simply not forthcoming.
