The Hawthorns was the venue of a miserable bore draw yesterday as West Brom hosted fellow over achievers, West Ham United in their premier League fixture.
Both teams have performed remarkably this season, however they have also lost their ways as West Brom entered this game posterior to three back to back defeats, whereas West Ham were looking to recover from their upset against Liverpool last weekend.
The game got off to a fiery start as West Brom kicked off. West Ham immediately attempted to close them down, and numerous players sprinted for the ball. The travelling West Ham fans came in numbers rocking the Hawthorns with their traditional songs, including the famous ‘I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles’.
The best chances of the game came through Albion’s Odemwingie and West Ham’s Carlton Cole as both tried long range shots which barely tested the keepers.
West Brom looked to have the better of the Hammers during this game as they hit the woodwork and the bar deep into the latter stages of the game.
Despite going home with a point, the West Ham fans were slightly upset having seen their side draw blank, however, a brilliant defensive performance meant the Hammers have another clean sheet to their name. Hammer’s defender, Winston Reid is revelling in the limelight as he continues to go from strength to strength, and the Maori born centre back will be thoroughly pleased with his performances this season. Reid is also set to sign a contract extension when his current one ends this summer, the deal is expected to be 2 years long. The 24 year old also picked up the man of the match award.
Despite the game being a bore draw, it served up a few hasty challenges, with both sides picking up 3 yellow cards, for West Bromwich Albion, Olsson, Jones and Mulumbu picked up cards, whilst the Hammer’s, O’Brien, Tomkins and Nolan picked up theirs.
Due to this draw, the Hammer’s still sit in the bottom half of the table, whereas the Albion sit 6th after an impeccable start to their season.
Both teams were tipped as relegation candidates; however they have both provided a treat for their fans, defying all odds.
Despite a great performance in the league so far, the Albion faithful booed their side at the half time whistle.
The score line finished 0-0 and the Hammer’s will go home satisfied with a point.
