One horrific record is particularly painful and it’s on course to relegate West Ham United

West Ham United’s position in the Premier League is looking increasingly perilous.

Though there were certainly positives to have emerged from West Ham’s 3-2 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday in a thrilling Premier League clash, the Hammers do not have time on their hands.

For all of the positivity about their first half performance, the Irons collapsed after the break and sit five points from safety in the Premier League table – which could be extended to eight by the close of play on Sunday.

Going defensive too early cost us! 😡

Indeed, Nuno Espirito Santo has quite the job on his hands. West Ham have the worst defensive record in Europe’s major five leagues, but one particular statistic is even more painful than that.

West Ham have dropped 18 points from winning positions this season

No one in the Premier League has dropped more points from winning positions than West Ham this season (18).

To say they are generally architects of their own downfall would be an understatement.

With that in mind, what happened at Stamford Bridge is not exactly all that surprising.

Who is to blame for this? 😡

And, more importantly, what can be done to fix it?!

The fact that West Ham have enough in the tank to get themselves into a good position before squandering it is just so galling. They’ve let the season slip through their fingertips.

All but one of those collapses have come during the Nuno era and it’s already happened more times than last season, during which the Irons dropped 17 points from winning positions.

Why do West Ham keep dropping points from winning positions?

Hammers News subscribers on TalkingPoints appear to believe that Nuno has a tendency to go too defensive too early.

That was again raised as a discussion point when Nuno substituted forward Pablo Felipe for defender Max Kilman against Chelsea.

Kilman has endured an awful lot of criticism during his time in east London and it’s important to stress that the blame is not entirely at his door.

The message the West Ham boss was sending in making such a defensive call, however, hardly spoke of a team who were looking to press home their advantage.

Though Chelsea were in the ascendancy at the time, they hadn’t scored their second goal of the game at that point.

Asked about that call during his post-match press conference after the game, Nuno said: “No [it wasn’t too defensive], it was a moment that we felt, when Chelsea scored the first goal, the wide areas were not in control. The wingers were not able to control their full-backs, to allow Malick [Diouf] and Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] to go stronger.

“At the same time, we have to defend the box. When they cross, we have to defend it and we didn’t.”
