Electric 9/10 star shines, 4/10 debutant awful – West Ham player ratings vs Bournemouth

West Ham United played host to Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup tonight, and Hammers News have compiled our player ratings from the game.

It was another slow start from West Ham in the Carabao Cup clash with Bournemouth tonight, with our play through the middle of the pitch lacking any kind of cohesion.

Julen Lopetegui has only been in charge at the London Stadium for eight weeks, so we have to be patient.

The Hammers boss definitely has a lot of work to do though, if he is to get this group firing on all cylinders sooner rather than later.

Lopetegui’s starting lineup saw seven players come into the side from the win over Palace on Saturday – it would have been eight but Aaron Cresswell suffered a knock during the warm-up.

As a result, the performance was kind of clunky, with big improvements clearly needed. But which players impressed and which ones flattered to deceive?

West Ham player ratings vs Bournemouth

It was a real mixed bag from the boys tonight.

Some laid down a real marker, whilst others were very poor indeed. Here’s how Hammers News rated the players…

Lukasz Fabianski 6.5/10

The 39-year-old produced a brilliant save late on in the first-half and didn’t make any errors. However, his passing and composure with the ball at feet was not up to scratch once again.

Vladimir Coufal 5/10

The 32-year-old just isn’t good enough to be playing at the very highest level anymore. He tries hard but that’s about it. He was skinned on numerous occasions tonight.

Max Kilman 8/10

Another colossal display from our £40 million summer signing. Kilman is a top-class centre-back, and was one of the best players on the night for us. In fact, the 27-year-old has been the standout player for the Hammers during the first three games of the season.

Jean-Clair Todibo 4/10

Really, really poor from the 24-year-old tonight. It was his first start for West Ham, so we have to be patient with him, but he looked well off the pace. He was sloppy in possession, and slow in the tackle. Got booked in the first-half and just seemed too desperate to impress for me. He was hooked at half-time.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 9/10

A brilliant display from the pacy 26-year-old. He defended incredibly well and looked dangerous going forward. Was involved in some wonderful passages of play down the left-hand flank. Wan-Bissaka showed what he’s all about midway through the second-half when he used his incredible recovery pace to cut out a Bournemouth counter-attack.

Edson Alvarez 7.5/10

Our Mexican machine was very good tonight. It is so good to have him back, and he makes such a huge difference for us with the way that he snaps into tackles and takes responsibility by receiving the ball in tight areas.

James Ward-Prowse 5/10

I’m sorry but the 29-year-old just offers us absolutely nothing. He has no mobility, no physicality and lacked any kind of athleticism. I wouldn’t be surprised one little bit if he left before the transfer window closes.

Tomas Soucek 5/10

A poor all-round performance from the Czech. I get that he’s useful in both boxes, and puts his head where others won’t, but I just don’t see what he offers aside from that.

Crysencio Summerville 6.5/10

Didn’t get involved in the game enough in the first-half, and failed to use his devastating pace to his advantage. Missed a very good chance late on in the first-half. That said he did show glimmers of his quality early on in the second-half and was much more involved in proceedings. Bigger and better things to come from Summerville, no doubt.

Jarrod Bowen 7/10

An unusually quiet night from the skipper. He worked hard as usual, but failed to get into the dangerous positions where he always excels. However, he’s in the goal business and he did score the winner. That changed his score from a 5 to a 7.

Niclas Fullkrug 5/10

The German was like a lamppost I’m afraid to say. Sure, the service that he received, or lack thereof, was really poor, but he needs to put himself about so much more.

Subs:

Konstantinos Mavropanos 6/10

The Greek defender replaced Todibo at half-time and put in a decent display. I actually think he’ll come back into the team for Saturday’s clash with Manchester City.

Lucas Paqueta 7/10

Got on the ball immediately and showed his quality in possession. Without him we are so, so poor and that’s a huge worry.

Guido Rodriguez 6.5/10

Solid performance from the Argentinian ace. He’ll 100% be back in the side on Saturday.

Mohammed Kudus 7.5/10

Always tries to make things happen, and his introduction with 20 minutes to go immediately made us look more dangerous. He played a key role in our winning goal after his shot was touched home by Bowen.

Emerson Palmieri 6/10

Didn’t really get into the game and wasn’t given enough time to impress in all fairness to him.

So in conclusion…

Overall, it was a tepid performance from West Ham, one that lacked any kind of energy or dynamism.

Julen Lopetegui has a lot of hard work to do on the training ground over the next few weeks, if he’s to get a tune out of the current squad.

One thing that really needs to improve is the bravery from the defenders when they’re trying to play out from the back. It’s a system that doesn’t work without being brave.

The West Ham player ratings tonight highlighted a lot of issues facing Lopetegui.
